Quick Strike Bluejays Too Much For Triton

NORTH JUDSON – The Triton Trojans and the North Judson Bluejays had more on the line in this year’s Hoosier North Athletic Conference (HNAC) clash last night than they’ve had between each other since 2018. Triton entered Friday’s fray ranked #8 in the IFCA coaches’ poll, and #11 in the AP media poll. North Judson entered the contest ranked #3 in both of those polls.

The Blue Jays (7-0, 5-0) quick strike offense traveled mostly by ground, and occasionally – but very efficiently – by air in a 62-22 Homecoming win over Triton Friday night. The last 3:58 of the game was played using the IHSAA Mercy Rule’s running clock.

Anthony Schuh, Triton’s 6’2” 215 lb. workhorse running back who entered the game with over 1,100 yards in his first six games, scored on a 70-yard run on the left perimeter on the third play from scrimmage and Cole Shively kicked the extra point to put the Trojans up 7-0 surprising the Bluejay faithful 97 seconds into the contest.

Shively’s TD run with 3:00 remaining in the second quarter followed three straight Bluejay trips to paydirt, moving Triton within one score. However, it took the Bluejays just 28 seconds to counter the Trojan signal caller’s score with 2:32 left in the first half.

North Judson’s fourth score was testimony to its ability to score quickly. Brock Benson barreled through and past Triton defenders for two consecutive runs, the second a 46-yard buck sweep down the left sideline after Triton appeared to momentarily breathe new life.

North Judson’s quick strike capability was evident rolling up four scores in 6:20 of possession time in the 24-minute first half. North Judson had not used more than three minutes among any of their four first half scores, with three of those touchdowns coming after two or three plays.

“We let them get into our heads a little, but our kids battled. (North Judson is) a good, solid team,” Triton head football coach Rodney Younis said.

The first half closed with a football version of the old-school playground game, hot potato, when the two teams combined for four consecutive turnovers within the final 90 seconds of the first half.

North Judson first flirted with the IHSAA Mercy Rule’s running clock but missed their extra point kick to move ahead 49-14. Triton’s Schuh closed the Bluejays’ lead to 49-22 with his second touchdown, a 21-yard dash along the right sideline with 9:22 left in the final stanza.

Benson (24 carries, 204 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Senior tailback Cheyenne Allen (10 carries, 94 yards, 2 TDs) were a deadly I-formation combination of speed and power. Quarterback Aldric Harper completed his first three passes and finished 4-6 for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns, one, an 82-yard strike to Gabe Ellis for North Judson’s second score. Harper also rushed for 46 yards and 3 TDs.

“Our kids are gonna’ play to the very end,” Younis said of his team’s continued high level of effort throughout the night. “We’re disappointed but we’re gonna keep working. We’ve got two more games and we’re gonna give it our best.”

North Judson (347 rush yds., 124 pass yds.) outgained Triton (345 rush yds., 44 pass yds.) 471-389. While there was not much disparity in total yards, five Trojan turnovers (3 lost fumbles, 2 interceptions) set up opportunities for North Judson to steadily expand their lead throughout the evening.

Schuh led the Trojans (5-2, 3-2 HNAC) scoring two touchdowns and gaining 163 yards on 22 carries . Shively added 96 yards on 15 totes to his TD scramble.
