Second-Half Surge Helps Wawasee Win At Angola

Trailing 25-24 at halftime, the Warriors opened the third quarter on a 5-4 run. That was good enough for a 31-29 lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore Myles Everingham. By the end of the third period, Wawasee was ahead 38-31 and never led the Hornets get closer than six points in the fourth quarter.
Maddux Everingham (20 points), sophomore Myles Everingham (14), junior Collin Ziebarth (13), senior Collin Roberson (9) and senior Peyton Felger (3) accounted for all of the points scored by the Warriors.
Maddux Everingham tallied nine in the first quarter with three of his four 3-pointers and he also defended junior Dane Lantz, holding him to four points.
Wawasee coach Jon Everingham called it the best game of Maddux’s career.
“We probably don’t win tonight without his performance on both ends of the floor,” says Jon Everingham. “Maddux is kind of known as a just a shooter. He wants to break that mold. Tonight, he was a good defender.”
With Maddux making 5-of-13 shots from the floor (4-of-9 from 3-point range), the Warriors connected on 17-of-40 (8-of-18 in the second half).
Besides Maddux, Myles Everingham and Ziebarth canned 3-pointers.
Wawasee led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter, trailed 25-24 at halftime and was up 38-31 going into the fourth quarter.
Wawasee (1-1) held Angola (0-1) to 6-of-21 field goal shooting in the second half (17-of-43) for the game. The Hornets missed all nine of their free throw attempts.
Junior Lane King (15 points), senior Tyler Call (13) and senior Landon Herbert (8) led Angola in scoring.
“We just got rattled when they made a little run and just never seemed to recover,” said Angola coach Brandon Appleton. “We got impatient offensively.
“We didn’t do a great job defensively of communicating what our assignments were. We just didn’t execute well in the second half.
“I definitely would have expected more out of (Lantz) tonight. They did a good job of taking him away and not get in rhythm shooting the basketball. But you know we have to have other guys step up and hit some shots and take that pressure off Lane inside and Dane on the outside.”
Guided by Roberson (9), junior Carson Smith (5) and Felger (4), the Warriors pulled down 28 rebounds.
King (9) and Call (5) had more than half of the Hornets’ 25 rebounds.
“We weren’t quite playing to the pace I want to after rebounds,” said Everingham. “We got to get open shots quicker. I think we can do that. I really do.
“We can execute well can execute well in our transition break. We want to really put pressure on teams that they’re going to have to outscore us.”
Wawasee committed six turnovers — three in each half. Angola coughed up the ball nine times — seven in the second half.
The Warriors used nine players. Besides the Everingham twins, Felger, Roberson and Ziebarth in the starting lineup, Smith logged almost 17 minutes, sophomore Weston Hoffert almost 10 with juniors Mason Shoemaker and Weston DeLong being on the floor less than a minute.
“We had good bench contributors,” said Everingham.
Freshman Nolan Holzwart was still out with a quadriceps injury.
In the junior varsity game, Angola (1-0) won 38-35 over Wawasee (0-2).
Leading scorers were junior Micah Steury (8 points) and sophomores Hunter Heisler (7) and Cam Steury (6) for the JV Hornets and sophomore Kane Dukes (13), DeLong (9) and sophomore Bradyn Pike (6) for the JV Warriors.
Wawasee goes to Manchester Friday, Dec. 2. The JV game is slated for with the varsity to follow around 7:30 p.m. The same night, Angola plays host to Central Noble.
