WINONA LAKE - Grace’s men’s basketball team topped 90 points for the fifth time this season, breezing by Goshen 94-58 on Tuesday.

The No. 3-ranked Lancers (8-0, 2-0 Crossroads League) continued their perfect start to the season by winning their eighth straight contest.

Grace had 11 players score during the rout, amassing an impressive 17 assists to five turnovers as a team.

Elijah Malone was a force to be reckoned with in the first half, and he started doing damage right away.

Malone dunked on the first play of the game. Then he blocked a shot on Goshen’s first play. He capped off the opening minute with a 3-pointer a few seconds later, handing the Lancers a fast 5-0 start.

The Lancers never trailed in the half, but the Maple Leafs scrapped and stayed within range.

Goshen used a few early 3-pointers to keep pace with Grace, but the Lancers remained in front.

Grace pulled ahead by 10 with 13 minutes to play in the half, but Goshen railed off six straight points to stay close.

The Lancers gained more separation in the final minutes, however, ending the half on an 8-0 run to grab a 45-31 lead at halftime.

Malone had 17 points to lead all players in the first half. Grace muscled its way to 22 points in the paint.

The Maple Leafs struggled against Grace’s defense, shooting just 29 percent from the floor. But Goshen helped its cause by turning the ball over once in the half.

Grace’s lead remained double digits throughout the second half. With 12 minutes remaining, the Lancers used an 11-2 run to create a 20-point lead.

The Lancers continued to build their lead until the final buzzer, employing their bench across the final four minutes as well.

Jaylen Reese and Cole Beck both hit a pair of 3-pointers off the bench during the last two minutes.

Malone finished the game with 21 points, 8 boards and 2 blocked shots in 22 minutes, and Cade Gibbs had 19 points and seven rebounds, shooting 8 of 11 from the floor.

Frankie Davidson tallied 17 points and eight rebounds, and Brycen Graber had 5 points, 9 assists and 1 steal with just 1 turnover.

Jake Wadding had seven points and eight rebounds, and Brett Sickafoose tallied seven points and four boards.

Grace shot 53 percent from the floor, while Goshen shot only 31 percent overall and 26 percent on 3-pointers.

Grace owned a plus-15 advantage in rebounds and finished with 44 points in the paint.

The Lancers have the rest of the week off before resuming Crossroads League play next week. Grace will travel to Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before returning home on Saturday for a home matchup against St. Francis.



Grace wins second straight in CL play

WINONA LAKE – Grace’s women’s basketball picked up its second consecutive Crossroads League victory with a 74-57 victory over Goshen on Tuesday night.

Maddie Ryman and Kiersten Findley fueled the Lady Lancers (6-1, 2-0 CL) in the victory, as both players topped 20 points in the victory.

Goshen (5-2, 1-1 CL) and Grace traded the lead early as both teams connected from beyond the arc.

Kaylee Patton gave the Lady Lancers a five-point lead at the midpoint of quarter, and another trifecta from Ryman extended the lead. At the quarter break the Lady Lancers led 22-17.

In the second quarter Findley scored early and often. The junior guard opened the second stanza with a two-point bucket, which started a 10-point outpouring from Findley. Her 10 points fell just shy of matching the Maple Leafs team total of 11.

Kenzie McMahon scored a late layup and Findley connected on her second 3-point basket of the quarter as Grace took a 40-28 lead into the half.

Ryman opened the third quarter with a pair of free throws but it was Goshen who controlled the start of the second half.

Grace shot just 31 percent from the floor from the quarter as they were outscored by Goshen 16-11 in the quarter. The Lady Lancers led by seven entering the final quarter.

The Lady Lancers defense was suffocating in the fourth and Ryman was a force offensively as Grace dominated the final quarter.

Ryman scored 11 points in the quarter including a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe. Grace’s defense held Goshen to just 28 percent shooting from the field.

The Lady Lancers converted from the line down the stretch as the salted away the 74-57. The 17-point margin was Grace’s biggest win at Goshen in 10 years.

“Always good to get a win in a league this tough,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “We defended well throughout the game and our offensive execution in the 4th was really good. We have so many girls who can step up on any given night which gives us a chance each and every night.”

Ryman led all players with 23 points and Findley followed close behind with 20. Karlee Feldman scored seven points and grabbed seven points.

Grace shot 44 percent from the floor compared to 35 percent from Goshen. Grace won the battle on the boards 28-23.

The Lady Lancers will next be in action next week against Mt. Vernon on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
