Lancer Basketball Teams Continue Winning Ways

The Lancers (7-0, 1-0 Crossroads League) trailed by four at halftime, but Grace outscored the Cougars by 16 in the second half to win the Crossroads League opener.
Five players scored in double figures, led by 19 points from Cade Gibbs.
The Lancers shot 53 percent from the floor as a team and 41 percent on 3-pointers in the win.
Back-to-back triples by brothers Jakob Gibbs and Cade Gibbs gave Grace an early 12-5 lead.
Another trifecta from Jakob Gibbs pushed Grace’s cushion to 23-16 with 12 minutes left in the opening half.
But the Cougars kept the game close and whittled away at Grace’s lead. SAU rattled off seven straight points late in the half, charging ahead 44-38.
The Cougars maintained their lead and grabbed a 48-44 advantage at halftime.
The Cougars shot the ball very well in the first half. SAU made 59 percent from the floor and 67 percent (6 of 9) on 3-pointers.
Cade Gibbs (13 points) and Jakob Gibbs (10 points) paced the Lancers’ scoring.
The Cougars remained in front for the first three minutes of the second half, but the Lancers had a big run in store.
Grace seized control of the game with 18 unanswered points. A triple from Carter Stoltzfus tied the score, and a dunk from Elijah Malone put Grace on top 57-55.
Frankie Davidson later added seven more points to further propel the Lancers ahead by the score of 69-55.
Grace’s defense had SAU in knots; the Cougars did not score for nearly five straight minutes during Grace’s run.
Spring Arbor never fully recovered. Grace kept a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game and coasted to the final 12-point margin of victory.
Davidson registered 17 points with six rebounds, and Jakob Gibbs had 16 points, 6 boards and 4 assists.
Malone had 14 points, 7 boards and 4 blocked shots, and Jake Wadding amassed 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
Brycen Graber had 5 points, 5 assists and 0 turnovers, Brett Sickafoose scored seven points with a pair of 3-pointers, and Stoltzfus added six points.
The Lancers remain at home next week for their lone outing. Grace will host Goshen on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to continue league play.
Grace Grinds Out First Conference Win Of The Season
WINONA LAKE – Grace’s women’s basketball picked up its first Crossroads League win of the season with a 75-70 win over Spring Arbor on Saturday night.
The Lady Lancers entered the game after recently appearing in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair with both teams holding double digit leads at one point in the game.
Grace scored the first six points of the contest before going cold from the field. The Lady Lancers shot just 22 percent from the field and trailed 19-13 after the first 10 minutes.
Karlee Feldman scored 11 of Grace’s 13 points. Spring Arbor shot 53 percent in the first quarter.
The Cougars continued their hot shooting in the second and pushed their lead to as many as 11 points. The Lady Lancers found their offensive rhythm however and closed the half on a 22-7 run.
Kiersten Findley thread nifty pass into Feldman whose layup in signature style helped kick start the Grace scoring spree.
Maddie Ryman got Lady Lancers to within two points with a pair of free throws and Peyton Murphy vaulted Grace into the lead with a 3-point basket.
Ryman scored two more field goals late and Kate Rulli added a tally of her own as the Lady Lancers took a 38-33 lead into the halftime break.
Grace caught fire from the field in the second quarter, shooting an eye popping 90 percent from the floor. Feldman’s halftime stat line read 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Lancers continued to pad their lead in the quarter and eventually opened up a 21-point advantage.
Ryman and Findley scored the first two baskets of the second half and Feldman added four more points as the Lady Lancers continued to roll.
Feldman started a fastbreak opportunity with a steal and dished a pass to Ryman whose layup put Grace ahead 59-38 with 3:51 left in the quarter.
Spring Arbor finished the quarter out strong though and had clawed back to 59-47 as the game entered the final frame.
The Cougars continued their ferocious run in the fourth quarter and with just 3:52 left trailed by just two points.
Findley helped turn the tide with a trifecta and Feldman earned a trip to the charity stripe as Grace built back up a bit of separation.
Ryman and Findley both scored free-throws late as the Lady Lancers preserved the 75-70 victory.
“Thrilled to pick up our first conference win of the season,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “Spring Arbor came out firing, but credit to our girls for sticking with it and holding a lead at the half. Love the maturity and execution that we showed late to earn the hard-fought victory.”
The Lady lancers finished the game an even 50 percent from the field and held a narrow 33-32 advantage on the boards.
Feldman double double for the fifth time this season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Findley was an efficient 6-11 from the field and finished with 17 points. Ryman scored 16 points and Murphy had four steals.
Grace will hit the road for the first time this season with a 7 p.m. showdown with Goshen on Tuesday.
No. 6 Eagles Edge By Grace In NAIA Second Round
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Grace’s women’s soccer team was unable to hand No. 6 Oklahoma Wesleyan its first loss of the season, falling 1-0 on Saturday in the NAIA Second Round.
The No. 18 Lady Lancers and No. 6 Eagles tangled evenly throughout Saturday’s national tournament match. But a 78th-minute goal was enough to push OKWU (22-0-1) into the next round of the NAIA tournament.
The first half was evenly played. Grace stuck to its possession attack and built a few dangerous moments from the back.
JJ Aalbue had Grace’s best look of the half with a shot from outside the 18-yard box that went high.
Oklahoma Wesleyan was largely held in check on offense. The Lady Lancers’ defense was organized and composed under pressure, limiting the Eagles’ attempts.
The teams entered halftime scoreless. Oklahoma Wesleyan had six shots, but none of those were on goal.
The game increased in physicality as the second half continued. The Eagles pelted the ball into the box repeatedly, but Grace’s defense dealt with most of the dangerous moments cleanly.
Grace’s chances on offense were few across the first 30 minutes.
The Eagles finally broke through with 12 minutes left in regulation. Oklahoma Wesleyan curled in a 20-yard blast to the far post to hand the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Lancers’ best moments came in response. Grace moved the ball more purposefully after falling behind, gaining a few dangerous moments.
Kailey Burrell was sharp along the left sideline. One of her crosses was put in front of the goal near Luisa Machado, but Machado was unable to redirect her quick attempt past the goalkeeper.
Madison Tuma also tried a shot in the closing 10 minutes, as did Lea Moessinger, but the Lady Lancers’ search for a late equalizer came up empty.
The Lady Lancers (13-5-2) will shift their attention to a potential bid to the NCCAA National Championship. With an at-large bid, Grace would have a chance to defend its NCCAA crown. The Lady Lancers won the NCCAA championship last season for the program’s first national title.
