Amazin’ Hazen Book- Signing For Local Motorsports Legend Paul Hazen

By Staff Report-

It’s not every day a retired local mechanic and former International Harvester employee gets a book written about them, but it’s also not everyday you have someone so successful for so many years doing something they love.  Paul Hazen, from Columbia City, completed his 65th year in sprint car racing just a few weeks ago with his accomplishments rivaling those of legends in the sport.

With nearly 70 drivers hopping behind the wheel of the Hazen #57 sprint car over the years, including the first 11 years with Hazen himself as driver and Jimmie and Tony Elliott from Warsaw, they amassed an incredible 248 feature wins and 21 Track Championships!  All of the history, drivers and championships have now been gathered together, along with many driver interviews and entertaining racing stories in a new book titled “Amazin’ Hazen” by motorsports author, Kim Gregory-Baney, from Warsaw.

Hazen has already been recognized with many awards including the 2003 HARF (Hoosier Auto Racing Fans) Mechanical Achievement award, the 2007 HARF Hall of Fame induction, 2014 Warsaw Speedway Hall of Fame induction, and the 2019 IRMA (Indiana Racing Memorial Association) Historical Marker recognition with a permanent marker being erected at Kokomo Speedway, but can now add this book to his accolades.

The book includes the stories of such drivers as Jimmie and Tony Elliott, Rocky Fisher, Lou Mann, Larry Rice, Don Hewitt, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Thomas, Johnny Parsons, Jr., Bryan Clauson, Jon Stanbrough, Shane Cottle, Thomas Meseraull, Clinton Boyles, and Justin Grant who have all driven the famous #57 sprinter over the years, giving Hazen an endless number of stories and memories to last a lifetime.

Also included is how from local weekly shows at hometown dirt tracks to the national USAC Sprint Tour, the Hazen 57 has stayed competitive, even without the high-dollar sponsors and benefit of new equipment each year.  Now past 80 years old, Hazen’s passion for dirt sprint car racing continues on, spending nights in the garage working on the car, preparing his beloved #57 for the next season, the next event, the next feature race with young 16 yr. old racing sensation, Hoyer from Frankfort, currently behind the wheel.

Paul Hazen and author, Kim Gregory-Baney, will be the guests of the Kosciusko County Historical Society on Saturday, Nov. 19, for a book-signing event at the Old Jail Museum in Warsaw. Visitors can meet Mr. Hazen, enjoy some racing stories, pick up a signed copy of the new “Amazin’ Hazen” book, and visit the current exhibit, “Remembering the Warsaw Speedway”, before the exhibit ends in mid-December.  The event will be held from 11am – 2pm.  The Old Jail Museum is located at 121 N. Indiana St. in Warsaw.  You can also pick up a copy of the book from Amazon.com or by emailing the author at [email protected].
