Triton Gets Past Manchester In 47-37 Battle

By Connor McCann-

Triton head coach Kennedy Krull did not mince words after her team’s Friday evening contest against the Manchester Lady Squires, despite the Trojans coming out on top with a 47-37 victory.

“That was not a pretty game,” Krull said. “Not by a long shot. We did not play well by any capacity.”

Scoring came at a premium both early and late in the game with a decent stretch of offense being played throughout the second quarter and towards the beginning of the third.

The contest started out with some ferocious defense being played by both sides. Assisting the matter was some sloppy offensive play that led to a plethora of turnovers and poor shot selection. The first points would be scored two minutes into the contest on a pair of free throws by junior center Addyson Viers. Fans in attendance would have to wait another four minutes to see points again, as both Triton and Manchester used presses, zones and everything in between to keep the ball out of the basket.

Trailing 4-0 after another pair of free throws by Viers, it would be the Lady Squires making the first field goal of the game with a minute and a half remaining in the opening quarter. A long two-pointer by freshman Peyton Ream would put Manchester on the board. With about five seconds remaining in the period, Triton would score its first field goal on a triple by senior Kinsey Atkins. It was the only make of Triton’s six first quarter attempts from deep. Atkins finished the game with six points but made her presence felt defensively, grabbing four steals.

It didn’t take much of the second quarter for both offenses to flow much more coherently. Manchester sophomore Brookelynn Buzzard would open up the quarter with a three to get things going and Triton would accept the invitation to party. After just three minutes the score had jumped to 11-9 in favor of the Trojans. Fresh out of a mid-quarter timeout, Buzzard would hit another triple to give the Lady Squires their first lead of the game at 12-11. Buzzard scored ten first half points, all in the second quarter of play. The guard would finish her night with 15.

Both offenses really shined in the final three minutes before half, flying up and down the court at incredibly high speeds compared to how the contest started off. When the dust finally cleared, the home team would take a 22-18 advantage into halftime.

“One of the nice things about this team is how deep our bench is, which gives us a lot of options throughout the game,” Krull said. “I guess the girls needed a warm up before turning it on.”

The Trojans would stay hot to begin the third quarter, putting up five quick points on a steal-and-score from Jocelynn Faulkner and a deep ball made by Emily Bugg. Triton would extend its lead to double-digits for the first time in the game just three minutes into the quarter. After the outburst to begin the second half, things slowed down once again. The Lady Squires got a couple of big buckets in the paint from junior Kim Schroll to stick with Triton and go into the final quarter down nine.

Already putting together a nice game up to that point, Viers would take over in the fourth. The junior battled for every rebound opportunity, coming down with the ball more times than not. If Viers wasn’t scoring in the low post, she was being fouled and sent to the line. The Trojans center would end her evening with 19 points and 15 rebounds to go with four blocks.

“Addyson’s rebounding tonight is exactly where we need her to be. “I wish we could get her even more involved down there because she’s working so hard,” Krull said. “She shied away from some of the pressure going up for her shots tonight but we’re working on it.”

Despite not many points being put up on the scoreboard by players other than Viers, the final quarter was played at a frantic pace. Both teams hustled up and down the court playing tough defense and unwilling to give an inch of separation. Manchester would get the lead down to seven with a minute and a half left to play but could get no further, as Triton converted on most of its free throws to put the game on ice.

“I thought our energy at the end of the game was really good, especially from our senior leaders,” Krull said. “Kinsey’s elbow is really swollen right now and she played the last two minutes with that, just shows how much she wants to win.”

Triton is now 2-0 and plays its next game Tuesday at Argos. Manchester is also in action Tuesday evening, playing its home opener against Lewis Cass and looking to improve the team’s 0-2 record.
