NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester University Athletics and the MU Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) were honored to hold its awards reception – the Manny Awards –in the Upper Jo Young Switzer Center on Monday. Meeting in person for the awards reception for the first time in three years due to the COVID pandemic, Manchester recognized some of its top student athletes for their outstanding accomplishments on the field and in the classroom during the 2021-22 academic year.

Junior distance runner Enrique Salazar (Plymouth) and fifth-year distance runner Elizabeth Lohman (Fort Wayne) were named the Manchester University Athletics Male & Female Athletes of the Year.

Salazar has had one of the most dominant years by a Manchester athlete in school history. During the cross country season, Salazar was a two-time Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honoree. He earned All-HCAC honors as well as All-Great Lakes Region honors from the United States Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Salazar moved up to 2nd all-time in Manchester history after running a time of 25:12 at the 2021 Calvin University Knight Invitational. On the track & field circuit, Salazar swept the indoor and outdoor HCAC Men's Distance Athlete of the Year Award. Enrique helped the men's track & field team earn its first-ever indoor and outdoor HCAC crowns. Also earning all-region honors from the USTFCCCA in track & field, Salazar established five new school records in 2022.  The four-time HCAC Male Track Athlete of the Week also earned Academic All-HCAC recognition this year.

Lohman also had a stellar year for the cross country and track & field programs. Lohman was the 2021 HCAC individual cross country champion, and was also the HCAC Indoor and Outdoor Women's Distance Athlete of the Year. Lohman was a three-time HCAC Female Athlete of the Week during the fall cross country campaign. She also earned All-Great Lakes Region honors from the USTFCCCA and qualified for the 2021 NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships. Lohman added one HCAC Female Track Athlete of the Week honors in 2022 and helped the women's outdoor track & field team to a sweep of the HCAC indoor and outdoor titles – the first such sweep for the women since 2016. During the fall, Lohman ran the 7th fastest time in school history (22:25). She also added three top 10 marks during the spring track & field seasons.

Senior football linebacker Jalen Masden (Evansville) was selected as the 2022 Warren K. Garner Award recipient while senior women's basketball player Bridget Nash (Carmel) received the Betty Clark Award. The awards are bestowed to a male and female student athlete that demonstrate the ideals of Manchester University in regards to academics, athletic achievement, leadership, and courage.

Senior men's soccer player John Velasquez (Marion) and senior track & field thrower Erica Mohr (Payne, Ohio) earned the M Club Director's Award – given annually to the male and female senior student athletes with the highest overall grade point averages.

Junior cross country and track & field athlete Hannah Brubaker (Goshen) and junior volleyball and track & field thrower Dakota Goetz (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) were honored as the M Club Co-Sportswoman of the Year. Junior men's track & field thrower Ben Villafuerte (Angola) was named the Sportsman of the Year.

Additionally, Manchester University Athletics & the MU SAAC honored former Spartan tennis standouts Karly Eichenauer (North Manchester) and Isaac Miller (Millersburg) with both the 2021 M Club Director's Awards and Betty Clark and Warner Garner Awards.
