Owner Marilyn McDonald said this year is the seventh season for the ice cream shop at 108 W. Main St. The Igloo will be open through Oct. 8.
“But we won’t close a day. Every holiday everything will be open. It’s 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. now, 12 to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Then when school gets out, it’s till 10 p.m.,” she said.
No matter what flavor of ice cream you’re in the mood for, The Igloo is likely to have it.
McDonald said, “We have over 30-some hand-dips. And we have soft serve, we have pineapple, we have lemon, we have shakes, we have sundaes, we have doughnuts - we have a little bit of everything. We don’t really have food, it’s just mainly ice cream, but it’s the best ice cream.”
They are starting a new coffee menu.
“So we’ll coffee drinks, like lattes and frappes,” she said. A barista came in and made up a whole new menu for The Igloo. “I’m real excited about that. That’s brand new this year.”
The Igloo also will have a few new sundaes coming.
“We have the best ice cream around. It’s Chocolate Shoppe ice cream out of Wisconsin. It doesn’t get any better than that,” she said.
Many organizations sell ice cream from The Igloo as a fundraiser.
“We do pre-dipped half pints. We do it for the Warsaw sorority for the eyeglasses. We do it for schools. The student council over at Tippecanoe Valley, they sold it at all the football and basketball games. They probably made over $4,000 to $5,000 for the student council, which is really cool because at Christmas, they sponsor like 150 families, so it helps them with a lot of money that way,” she said.
The Igloo also does weddings, graduation parties, etc.
“You can buy the pre-dipped,” she said. “So we do a lot of stuff like that. We’re always out there in the community, that’s for sure.”
It’s not just chocolate or vanilla flavors offered for the fundraisers, either. McDonald said it can be the butter pecan, black cherry and the other “good stuff.”
If you have a family dog, you can get it a treat at The Igloo, too. They have Mindy Cup, Coop Scoop and Baxter Bones.
“They just come in and they know this place. When you pull in the drive, they know this place,” McDonald said of the dogs. Last year, they sold over 1,000 doggie treats.
“We’ve done over 50,000 waffle cones in six years. Fifty-thousand waffle cones. Those are all handmade,” McDonald said.
And they’re handmade at The Igloo in Silver Lake.
“We just do phenomenal business. And it’s such a great place to come, to sit out here. It’s just an amazing place. Who would have thought in little Silver Lake?” McDonald said.
