The Tigers were down 42-31 to Concord with 6:27 to play only to pull even at 56-all on a turnover and 3-pointer by junior Jaxson Gould with 45 seconds to go Friday, Jan. 21 in Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball at McCuen Gym.
“We did a good job of speeding them up,” said Warsaw coach Matt Moore of the late rally. “Sometimes when you play not to lose you get a little hesitant. I thought they were trying to hold on rather than attack us.
“That gave us a chance to turn them over. They missed a couple free throws.”
A layup by senior Malachi Emmons with two seconds remaining made the difference for the Minutemen in a 58-56 victory.
Concord coach Derrick DeShone described the game-deciding sequence.
“(Warsaw) didn’t have any timeouts left and we didn’t want to give them an opportunity to change a defense or set up (an offensive play) on a make or a miss,” said DeShone. “With (Emmons) one-on-one we’ll take our chances. It was real good defense. He just made a tough shot over them.”
The Minutemen pushed their win streak to three and improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the NLC while Warsaw saw its two-game win skein end and fell to 9-5 and 3-1.
Jaxson Gould (28 points — 11 in the first quarter with three of his four 3-pointers), junior Drew Heckaman (10 — eight in the second half) and senior Judah Simfukwe (9 — all in the second half) led the Tiger attack.
Concord was guided by senior Zaven Koltookian (22 points — 10 in the fourth quarter), Emmons (13 — eight in the second half), senior Amarion Moore (11 — seven in the second half) and senior Andres Dixon (8 — six in the second half).
The Minutemen took a 35-39 lead into the fourth quarter and being up 22-17 at halftime. The score was tied 13-13 at the close of the first period.
“We’ve got to do a better job as a staff,” said Moore. “The second quarter hurt us.
“We did not prepare well. Our guys did not have a good Thursday practice. But sometimes tough times don’t last, tough people do.”
Including a 37-33 win in 2020-21 at the Tiger Den, Concord has now beaten Warsaw in two straight meetings. The all-time series is now at 48-22 in the Tigers’ favor.
The Minutemen committed 16 turnovers (seven in the fourth quarter) and Warsaw made 10 (four in the fourth period).
Moore (8) and Koltookian (7) grabbed more than half of Concord’s 27 rebounds.
Led by junior Russ Winchester, the Tigers gathered 16 rebounds.
Finishing the second quarter on a 7-2 run, the Minutemen led 22-17 at halftime. The biggest differential of the second period came when Concord went up 22-15 on a basket by Koltookian.
The score was knotted at 13-all at the end of the first quarter. Concord scored the game’s first five points. Warsaw took its first advantage at 11-9 on a bucket by Jaxson Gould.
Luke Bricker (18 points), Brandt Martin (12) and Austin Polk (6) led Warsaw past Concord 48-36 in junior varsity action. Braedon Messenger (22) and Davon Smith (6) topped JV Minutemen scoring.
