Early Barrage Subdues Spartans on the Road

The Panthers connected on their first 10 field goal attempts of the game. A 12-0 Hanover run over the game’s initial two and a half minutes was broken up by a trio of free throws by senior CJ Hampton (Hammond). After Hampton’s makes at the charity stripe, Hanover used another 12-0 blitz that saw the Panthers remain unblemished from the field, going 5-5 over the game’s next three minutes.
Hanover led 47-28 at the half.
While Hanover cooled off some in the 2nd half, the Panthers still finished Saturday’s game shooting 47.6 percent (30-63) from the field. HC also shot 44 percent (11-25) from the perimeter in Saturday’s win.
Manchester was unable to find any traction in Saturday’s contest as the Spartans were limited to 31.8 percent (21-66) shooting from the field. The Black & Gold also had an off-day from distance, going just 5-of-22 from three-point territory.
CJ Hampton led Manchester with 19 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Hampton now sits just one point shy of reaching the 1,000 point threshold in his career. Brandon Christlieb (Ashley) added 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the effort.
Max Greenamoyer led Hanover with 21 points – 18 of which he scored in the opening half. Ty Houston added 16 points while Isaac Hibbard added 13 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists for Hanover.
Manchester (6-9, 5-3 HCAC) had its four-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans are scheduled to return to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Wednesday January 18. The Black & Gold are slated to host the Bluffton University Beavers at 7:30 p.m.
Hanover College (11-2, 7-1 HCAC) remained alone atop the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings after winning for the fourth straight outing. The Panthers are slated to travel to Transylvania University for a 7:30 pm matchup with the Pioneers on Wednesday January 18.
Panthers Knock Off Spartans on Saturday
HANOVER, Ind. – The Manchester University women’s basketball team returned to action for the first time in 10 days on Saturday afternoon at Hanover College. The host Panthers defended their home court in a 72-47 victory over the Black & Gold.
Hanover dominated the glass, holding a 50-31 rebounding advantage in Saturday’s contest. The Panthers used the rebounding differential to their advantage as they were able to come away with 19 offensive rebounds and 23 second chance points in the contest. Hanover scored 44 points in the paint and converted 24 Spartan turnovers into 27 points.
Manchester was limited to 29.6 percent (16-54) shooting in the game. Hanover finished shooting 40.9 percent (27-66) on Saturday afternoon.
Hannah Lindsey (Speedway) led Manchester with 12 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Miranda Bieghler (Plainfield) scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Macy Miller (Huntertown) chipped in seven points and a career-high six steals.
Grace Bezold and Callie Wilder led Hanover with 14 points each.
The Spartans (6-6, 3-2 HCAC) are scheduled to travel to Bluffton University for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Beavers on Wednesday January 19.
Hanover College (7-5, 4-3 HCAC) is scheduled to host Transylvania University on Wednesday January 19 beginning at 7 p.m.
Manchester Turns in Strong Showing at Spartan Mat Classic
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – For the first time in two years, the Manchester University wrestling program was able to host its annual Spartan Mat Classic wrestling tournament inside of Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Saturday January 15. With the tournament underway, the Black & Gold hit the mats for the first time in the New Year and turned in a solid day of wrestling.
Mark Roberts (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle) awon his opening match of the day in the 133-lb. weight class. Roberts pinned Serenity Thomas of the University of Toledo to begin the day (4:40). After dropping his next bout of the afternoon, Roberts went on to earn a 4-2 decision over Cornerstone’s Devan Johnson. He ended the tournament with a fifth-place finish after pinning Heidelberg’s Josh Gibson (2:46) in his final bout of the day.
Devontay Moore (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) advanced to the winner’s side of the 184-lb. weight class bracket after earning a 7-5 decision in his opening bout over Wabash’s Teo Palubinskas. After dropping his second matchup of the afternoon, Moore rebounded with a 13-5 major decision victory over Defiance’s Joey Perez. Moore then added a 16-1 tech fall triumph over Muskegon’s Bronson Jewell. Moore posted a 3-2 mark on Saturday afternoon.
Josh Stephenson (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) won his opening bout of the tournament in the 133-lb. weight class, pinning Cleary’s Keemondre Robinson (1:59). Garrett Deaton (Danville, Ind./Danville) also earned a win on the day in the 197-lb. weight class. Elijah Phillips (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) earned a 6-0 decision over Cleary’s Ryan Weaver in the 149-lb. weight class.
The Spartans placed 11th overall with a team score of 21.5 points.
Manchester University Wrestling is scheduled to be back in action next weekend at the Wabash Invitational in Crawfordsville. Next week’s tournament is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
Spartans Earn Dual Meet Victories in the Pool on Saturday
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Returning to the pool for the first time in the New Year, the Manchester University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams both earned dual victories over the Hanover College Panthers inside of the Strauss-Peabody Aquatic Center on Saturday January 15.
The men topped Hanover College by an 86-58 final. The women defeated the Panthers by a final tally of 92-61. The Spartans won 15 events on the day.
