A new business in the county is looking to help other businesses thrive.

David Schmidt, owner of FocalPoint Business Coaching, said, “We are business coaches helping business owners so they can thrive together in this changing and challenging environment.”

He said he is part of a larger organization, FocalPoint International.

“There’s over 200 coaches nationwide and so I’m part of that group,” he said.

Tuesday afternoon, the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Schmidt’s business.

“I’m not new to the area, I’m new to this business,” he said in an interview before the ceremony. “So I have been working as an engineer at Medtronic most recently, as a process engineer, doing engineering work. So that’s one of the things I bring to the table is looking at businesses from an engineering perspective, being familiar with manufacturing, looking at processes, helping them eliminate waste in that.”

Right now, Schmidt said he’s focusing on smaller companies in Kosciusko County and the surrounding areas.

“Whether they’ve grown for a while and plateaued and they’re wanting to continue to grow, or maybe they struggle with time - a lot of people have more to do than they have time to do it in. Or, if they are struggling with keeping the right people at the work place, or group dynamics, things like that,” he said, they can delve into those issues and help businesses.

Schmidt works out his home and has a website at davidschmidt.focalpointcoaching.com from which he can be contacted.

“There’s also a business growth score card if they’re interested in taking that. That just gives you a snapshot of how you are doing as a business and it also gives you a report and how you can do better,” he said.

What is unique about his business, he said, is “my engineering background, I’ll be able to bring that to the forefront. I’ve also been a pastor so I have a heart for people and so helping people, creating better systems and improving systems is not new to me. I’m just bringing all those skill sets to the business.”

He said the FocalPoint franchise was developed mainly by Brian Tracy who studied business over the last 20-30 years.

“When he started out, he was a bad salesman. And he was like, ‘Why do these people here make so much more money than I do?’ He didn’t know, so he went and asked them. He said, ‘How can you do so much better?’ They gave him tips of how to do better and he started implementing those tips, and so within six months to a year, he was making the same kind of money that they were.”

Tracy took that same kind of curiosity in what makes one business better than another, selling the same product, etc., and taken everything he’s learned over the years and put it into a process and system that other businesses can learn from and apply to their business, taking them from good to great and helping them with any kind of challenges they have, Schmidt explained.
