NEW HAVEN - The Manchester Squires’ Dylan Stroud, wrestling at 132 pounds, will take his unblemished 40-0 won-loss record to Indianapolis Friday 6 p.m. and put it against a field of 16 elite wrestlers in his weight class.

Stroud posted four wins in the New Haven semi-state meet including pins in the opening round (2:42), and quarterfinal round (1:26). The Squire grappler followed those wins with a 7-1 decision over Bluffton’s Landon Bertsch, who only hit the loss column for the third time this season.

Stroud took position at the top of the podium following his title bout, a 10-6 decision over Logan Uhlman of Adams Central.

Rochester squeaked by Adams Central 82.5-80 for the New Haven semi-state team title.

Meanwhile, in East Chicago, 22 other area wrestlers who advanced from last week’s Penn Regional competed in the other Northern IHSAA Semistate wrestling meet, however, none of them will advance to the state wrestling tournament this weekend in Indianapolis.

Athletes earned a berth in the state tournament by winning two rounds to reach the semifinal round. Eight area wrestlers did, however, win their opening match to advance to the quarterfinal round where they ended their respective seasons in turn. The Crown Point Bulldogs dominated the field with 253 points on the backs of seven first place weight class finishes and two additional second place showings. The Penn Kingsmen, the regional host and team champion in last week’s regional involving area teams, was the distant team runner with 106 points.

Those wrestlers who won their first round matches to reach the quarterfinals are grouped by school, including the athletes’ weight class, and their final won-loss record:

Wawasee - Kaleb Salazar (106 lbs., 26-6), Ethan Rodriguez (145 lbs., 26-11), Cam Zimmerman (170 lbs., 26-13).

Tippecanoe Valley – Drake Montelongo (132 lbs., 37-6), Brandon Hammer (182 lbs., 34-4), Bazle Owens (195 lbs., 46-6).

Warsaw – Andrew Ross (152 lbs., 33-8), Jaxson Cooper Walters (170 lbs., 23-16).

Numerous area wrestlers will spend the offseason honing their skills in various types of tournaments within the state, and – in some cases - around the country.
