WARSAW - Warsaw freshman forward Lola Pepper scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute to tie the IHSAA Class 2A seventh-ranked Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger Saints 1-1 in a Saturday morning girls’ soccer match at the Tiger Soccer Complex. The deadlock moves the Tigers’ record to 3-2-1 with two previous losses coming from teams in IHSAA 3A’s top 10 rankings.

A Bishop Dwenger defender rolled under midfielder Rylee Burns, headed toward a shot on goal, resulting in the penalty kick opportunity for Pepper.

Warsaw spent most of the match defending on the Saints’ side of the field, and when the hosts had the ball Dwenger showed they did their homework, cutting off the passing lanes customarily contributing to Warsaw’s success in previous matches.

Head coach Jon Hoover packs his side’s non-conference schedule with strong competition to prepare for the rigors of postseason play.

“It's good to get those games in to make sure that we are ready,” Hoover said. “We’ll see (Class 3A third-ranked) Homestead in sectionals, and if we get through sectionals or regionals, we'll have teams like Hamilton Southeastern (Class 3A #1, def. Warsaw 6-0 Aug. 20), and (#2 ranked) Noblesville there so we just gotta keep grinding it out.”

Warsaw came out flat in the first half, testimony to a defensive mishap resulting in Dwenger’s Olivia Davis’s goal in the fourth minute, but Warsaw’s second half adjustments kept the match tight. Extended time would have been convenient for the Tigers if it were possible.

“If we're playing 10 or 15 more minutes, I think we could score another one or two goals… but it's a good team. We just can't give up the first goal again. We need to be committed and get the first 10 minutes taken care of.”

Warsaw, whose conference record is 2-0, hosts Goshen Tuesday 7:15 p.m. looking to avenge their only 2021 Northern Lakes Conference loss (3-2). The pregame ceremonies feature Teacher Night.

“We're ready,” Hoover remarked. “(G)oing into the season a lot of seems to say that this match puts the top two teams in the NLC playing off. (But) I told our girls every game in the NLC is the conference championship 'cause it seems like you need to go undefeated to win it. Games against (Class 3A #6) St. Joe and Hamilton Southeast prepared us well. It's gonna be a great game it's gonna be, a great atmosphere.”

The junior varsity Tigers fell to the Saints 3-0. The JV Tigers move to 2-1 this season. Their Tuesday match at the TSC versus Goshen is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
