WINONA LAKE – Grace College’s men’s soccer team picked up its third consecutive win to start the season with Saturday afternoon’s 3-0 victory over Southeastern.

The win was the Lancers’ (3-0) second straight over an opponent which is currently receiving votes in the NAIA top 25 poll.

The Lancers started the game on their heels as Southeastern (1-1-1) opened with a flurry of chances. The Fire had three corner opportunities and a pair of shots during the opening minutes.

Grace answered the mini barrage with a pair of chances of their own.

Martim Sequeira nearly netted a highlight reel goal with a bicycle kick that drifted wide of the goal mouth. On their next attack, a well-placed cross was headed on goal by Felipe Gruber, forcing the SEU keeper to make a timely save.

Grace and Southeastern traded chances in the middle portion of the half before the Lancers drew first blood.

On a set piece in Grace’s attacking end, Sequeira was brought down in the box with an aggressive tackle.

Sequeira calmly stepped into the penalty kick position and netted his third goal of the season to put Grace ahead 1-0.

The remainder of the half was a midfield battle as both teams continued to fight for control of the game.

The Fire had four shots in the first half compared to the Lancers’ five. Grace had six corner kick opportunities, and Southeastern had four.

Grace started the second half with a bang, netting their second goal just 2:46 into the period.

Scanferlato Simone made an aggressive defensive play that forced the Fire into a turnover. Daniel Santos Rosa grabbed the loose ball and sent a crossing pass into the box that found Sequeira, who netted his second goal of the game from close range.

Down by two goals, Southeastern began to pick up the intensity and got whistled for three yellow cards over the next eight minutes.

Shortly thereafter, the Fire generated a pair of scoring chances including an attempt that was swept clear of the goal by an alert Flavio Cruz.

The Fire subbed liberally late in the second half trying to find a goal but were unable to break Grace’s clean sheet.

The final mark on the game came when Juan Camilo Garcia crossed a ball off of a set piece. David Marquez blasted the ball into the back of the net to put Grace ahead 3-0.

With the game in hand, Grace continued to control the pace and picked up their second shutout win of the week.

Sequeira scored two goals in a game for the second time this season, and Matteo Conci made four saves in the victory.

The Lancers will conclude their four-game homestand with a Wednesday night tilt against No. 7 Indiana Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.



Grace Enjoys Goalfest Vs Trailblazers

WINONA LAKE - Grace’s women’s soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-0 rout of Ohio Christian on Saturday.

The Lady Lancers used two goals and an assist from JJ Aalbue and two more goals from Madison Tuma in the emphatic victory at 1st Source Bank Field.

Grace had no shortage of scoring chances in the opening minutes, including close-range efforts from Aalbue, Lea Moessinger and Janni Bettin.

Grace owned control of the match, keeping the Trailblazers pinned into their end of the field throughout the 90 minutes.

The Lady Lancers peppered OCU with 10 shots over the first 15 minutes.

The first goal of the match came 17 minutes into the contest. Moessinger made a weaving run toward OCU’s penalty box, then cleverly slipped a pass into Tuma.

Tuma took care of the rest, calmly slotting her shot into the net.

The second goal from Grace was a rocket. Danae Moriarty crossed into the box, and Janni Bettin touched a pass to Aalbue. Aalbue left no doubt, blasting her shot past the goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.

Grace’s third goal came in the 39th minute. Sam Vondersaar’s cross connected with Danae Moriarty, who headed the ball into the back of the net.

The match went into halftime with Grace ahead 3-0. The Lady Lancers had a dominant 19-1 advantage in shots and also had the only six corner kicks of the half.

It took Grace less than a minute to score again in the second half. The Trailblazers fouled Grace from 40 yards away from goal. Aalbue stepped up and sent a free kick laser past the goalkeeper’s gloves to improve Grace’s lead to four.

Not long after, Grace found its fifth goal. Aalbue skipped a pass wide to Kailey Burrell, and Burrell’s cross was finished by Filipa Marques.

Grace’s sixth goal was another header. Luna Gianotti skipped past a defender and sent a cross into the box, and Tuma thumped her headed effort in for her second goal.

The seventh and final goal was an individual effort from a freshman. Simone Castaneda dribbled by a pair of defenders and sent a 23-yard shot beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

Grace finished the game with 34 shots while holding OCU to just one attempt. The Lady Lancers also owned 10 corner kicks compared to one for the Trailblazers.

Libby Stratton and Sofia Lerro combined for the goalkeeping shutout, needing just one save between them. They were protected well by defenders Amber Meade, Kimberly Aalbue, Gianotti, Erin Crew, Lucy Schmitt and Megan DeBoest.

The Lady Lancers are back home next week on Saturday, playing host to West Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.



Grace Volleyball picks up win vs Rams

SYLVANIA, Ohio - Grace’s volleyball team registered their fourth win of the season at the Lourdes Classic in Ohio.

The Lady Lancers lost a pair of matches to begin the tournament, but Grace ended the tourney with a five-set victory against Bluefield.

In Friday’s opener against St. Xavier, the Lady Lancers made plays late to win a tight opening set.

SXU had 16 kills but committed eight errors. Grace, on the other hand, had 10 kills on a .276 percentage in the set.

Grace pulled ahead late thanks to kills from Jadyn Block and Livia Tate, but the Cougars rallied to tie the score at 23-23. Block produced another kill on the next rally, and SXU had an attack error on the final point to give Grace a 25-23 victory.

But the Cougars had the final say in the match. In the second set, the Cougars struck back with a 25-21 victory. Grace had just eight kills during the set.

The Lady Lancers seemed poised to regain the lead, holding a late 20-18 lead in the third set. But SXU rattled off seven unanswered points to claim the set.

Grace fought from behind throughout the fourth set and was unable to grab a lead. The Cougars went on to clinch the match with a 25-22 victory.

Alisha Leffring had eight kills and three block assists in her season debut, and Jadyn Ross had seven kills and 10 digs.

Morgan Syoen had a double-double with 19 assists and a team-best 16 digs, Tate added 6 kills, 1 solo block and 5 block assists, and Grace Erwin had 15 digs.

Grace’s offense struggled to get in sync during Friday’s nightcap against Lourdes. The Lady Lancers were swept in three sets 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.

As a team, Grace had 29 kills and 24 attack errors for a hitting percentage of .047. Lourdes, conversely, 34 kills on nine errors for a .240 percentage.

Leffring was again Grace’s most effective offensive player with seven kills on a .429 percentage, adding a pair of block assists.

Katie Swanson also had seven kills, Block had five kills, Syoen added 15 assists and eight digs, and Erwin had 16 digs.

Swanson starred during Saturday’s comeback win against Bluefield. The senior amassed a career-high 28 kills to lead Grace’s victory.

The Rams won the first and third sets by the identical score of 26-24. Grace had its worst offensive outputs during those two sets, hitting under .070 in each loss.

The Lady Lancers were dominant in the second set, winning 25-10. Grace won 10 of the first 11 points and never looked back.

After the Rams regained the lead with a third-set win, Grace needed to win to stay alive in the fourth.

The Lady Lancers did just that, opening up a 23-17 advantage and holding on for a 25-23 win. Colbert ended the set with back-to-back kills.

Midway into the decisive fifth set, Grace rattled off five straight points to seize control. Swanson had three kills during the stretch, and Emma Blackford aced for another point.

The Rams continued to battle and pulled within a point late. But Tate ended the match with kills on the 14th and 15th point as Grace won 15-13 to complete the comeback.

Swanson’s 28 kills came on a .458 percentage, and she added four block assists. Colbert also reached double figures with 11 kills.

Syoen erupted with 50 assists and 16 digs, Leffring had seven kills and seven block assists, and Erwin led all players with 29 digs.

Jadyn Ross (19 digs), Paige Vander Goot (13 digs) and McKenzie Stakely (12) boosted Grace’s back row, and Ross also served up four aces.

The Lady Lancers have another nonconference tournament next weekend at Bethel.
