ELKHART — When a high school soccer team is down 9-0 by halftime, the search for silver linings may feel more like a hunt for slivered linings.

No matter what kind of linings they are, Wawasee coach Jordan Sharp was able to come up with at least a couple after his shorthanded Warriors lost 9-0 at Concord on Thursday night.

“I can’t say enough about Mason Possell,” Sharp shared emphatically. “We put him up top a little bit because one of our other starters who normally plays up there was one of the guys we had out, but Mason, each game, no matter if it’s a win or a loss, leads us. I sometimes wonder, when are the rest of the guys going to catch that wind, catch that flame? Maybe it’ll be the next game, but I really thought he played a great game today.”

Sharp also sent props in the direction of goalkeeper Sylvester Trujillo. The senior was under near-constant duress in the first half, facing 17 shots on goal, but he made a handful of point-blank saves on his way to eight stops overall.

“Gotta toot his horn a little bit,” Sharp said. “He’s a hard worker, a great kid. Our backup keeper was quarantined today, so (Trujillo) had to play the JV half as well.”

The Warriors had two varsity players newly sent to quarantine Thursday and another player who was ill, leading to the alteration of the junior varsity game to just one half. The Minutemen won that contest, too, 3-0.

Then the second half of the varsity game was trimmed from 40 minutes to 20 by virtue of this year’s newly added nine-goal mercy rule.

“We don’t have an incredibly deep squad to begin with, so when we have guys out, it’s really tough,” Sharp said. “Our subs (in the varsity game) were all JV players today, and that’s never easy when you’re going up against a team like Concord.”

The Minutemen improved to 6-5-2 overall against a rugged schedule and stayed in the thick of the Northern Lakes Conference race at 4-1-1.

Wawasee dropped to 4-8-1 overall, 0-4 in the NLC.

“The thing that was hard about today was we also got our butts kicked Tuesday (11-2 against Goshen), but the guys worked hard in that game, had a belief about them,” Sharp said, “but today, I didn’t really feel that, so that’s the message. We’re saying, ‘Hey, don’t give up, keep showing heart, and we’ll keep improving.’ That’s all you can do.”

Slick senior Andres Dixon scored Concord’s first two goals and assisted on his team’s fourth one.

Dixon opened the onslaught six minutes in on a scissor kick off sophomore Aaron Makin’s perfect skip feed from the right wing, and then scored again three minutes later.

The Minutemen pushed their lead to 5-0 by the 15th minute.

Junior Gavin Miller and senior Emil Galeano each joined Dixon in netting two goals for Concord.

Miguel Aguilar, Gadiel Montiel and Parker Curtis scored in the first half as well, with Makin dishing two assists, Montiel one and Austin Walter one.

The Minutemen, with many of their regulars sitting out, never attempted a shot in the second half to finish the game at 17 on goal. The Warriors closed at one.

Wawasee hosts Warsaw on Saturday afternoon, while Concord welcomes No. 3-ranked Chesterton.
