Men's Soccer Wins 3rd Straight

NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester University men’s soccer team won its third consecutive game following a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Huntington on Wednesday September 22.

The Black & Gold got on the scoreboard first in Wednesday’s rain-soaked contest at Spartan stadium. After the Foresters were unable to clear a Manchester corner, Spartan sophomore Matt Brown (Carmel) fired a rocket into the back of the net to give Manchester a 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute.

The Foresters tied the game in the 35th minute following a long volley off the foot of Pablo Garcia. Huntington held a slim 5-3 advantage in shots taken in the opening period as both teams remained tied at 1 at the intermission.

The Spartans regained the lead early in the second half following a goal from Harley Kruschwitz (North Manchester). Kruschwitz’s goal in the 54th minute was put in from 20 yards out.

Huntington didn’t back down as the Foresters rallied to tie the score once more in Wednesday’s contest. In the 63rd minute, Nathan Lemmon sent a volley from 20 yards out past the outstretched arm of Manchester keeper Adrian De Leon for the equalizer.

The Spartans went ahead for good in the 73rd minute as Harley Kruschwitz scored once more for the Black & Gold. The current Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week now has seven goals on the season.

For the game, Manchester outshot Huntington 19-10 – including a 16-5 margin in the second half. The Black & Gold also held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks taken.

Manchester (3-4-1) won its third consecutive game, while Huntington dropped to 5-4 on the season.

The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday September 29 when they host Franklin College in Spartan Stadium to being Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.



Women’s Soccer Falls at St. Mary’s

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Manchester University women’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision on the road at St. Mary’s College on Wednesday September 22.

The host Belles scored all three of their goals in the second half. Rose Stackhouse scored her seventh goal of the season 59 seconds into the second period. Katie Harrington (48th minute) and Mary Kaczynski (78th minute) rounded out the scoring for SMC.

Adelle Stanko (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) led Manchester with three shots in the game. Becca Colbert (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) made 10 saves in goal.

The Spartans (1-4) will head to Alma College for another non-conference match on Saturday September 25. Saturday’s match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

The Belles moved to 7-1 on the season. SMC will play at Heidelberg on Saturday September 25.



Volleyball Storms Back, Stuns Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Manchester University volleyball team stormed back from a two-sets-to-none deficit to stun the host Kalamazoo College Hornets in five sets on Wednesday September 22.

The Hornets jumped out to a two-set advantage after taking the first two frames by 25-18 and 25-19 tallies.

Manchester did not wilt, roaring back in the third and fourth sets both by 25-15 counts.

The fifth and final set remained tight as neither side led by more than two points. After falling behind 13-12, the Black & Gold ended the match on a decisive 4-1 run. Back-to-back kills by Halle Planck (Gas City, Ind./Mississinewa) and Sara Shultz (Churubusco, Ind./East Noble) sealed the come-from-behind victory for Manchester.

The Spartans came away with 14 total blocks in Wednesday’s contest while limiting the Hornets to just a .016 hitting percentage. Kalamazoo hit -.103 and -.175 in the third and fourth sets.

Both Carley Camp (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) and Erika Kramer (Greensburg, Ind./North Decatur) led the block party with a pair of solo blocks. Camp added five block assists while Kramer assisted on four blocks. Sara Shultz and Halle Planck added four and three block assists, respectively.

Samantha Campbell (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and Sara Shultz both finished Wednesday’s match with 11 kills. Carly Ripberger (Tipton, Ind./Tipton) posted a team-high 34 assists, while Helaina Walters (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) led the Black & Gold with 25 digs.

Manchester improved to 6-7 on the season and is now 3-1 in five set matches. Kalamazoo fell to 3-7 on the year.

These two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Angola, Ind. as a part of the Trine tri-match. Following their second consecutive matchup with the Hornets, Manchester will face the Trine Thunder to conclude play on Saturday at 3 p.m.
