Squires Soccer Cruises Past Mishawaka 7-0

Senior Owen Kruschwitz — introduced before the game on the public address by his “Big O” nickname because it was easier than pronouncing his last name — assisted on every one of the Squires’ first five goals over the game’s first 50 minutes.
Sophomore Tyler McLain and junior Michael Ortiz each tallied hat tricks as Manchester improved to 6-4. Sophomore Chandler Music netted the final goal for the Squires with 16 minutes remaining.
“Sometimes it’s more fun to distribute the ball than score it because you see your teammates happy,” Kruschwitz said.
Kruschwitz was happy to notch his first career five-assist game, and wasn’t unhappy about that “Big O” reference over the PA.
“I didn’t know what was up with that,” Kruschwitz said, “but that’s fine, because they never get my name right anyway (at away games).”
Manchester coach Dave McKee called Kruschwitz’s performance “the best game he’s played, and it’s in a game he didn’t score a goal. One game, he had four goals, but he actually played better this game. He’s very calm out there.”
The Squires won for the third time in their last four outings, the loss being 2-1 to Class 2A No. 15 Oak Hill on Monday.
Mishawaka fell to 5-6 in the first-ever boys soccer meeting between the two schools.
“I don’t think they’re a bad team,” McKee said. “Just the last few games we’ve been really connecting on our passes. We’re looking better, and we’re a young team.”
McLain’s three goals came in a row, the last at five minutes into the second half, powering the Squires to a 4-0 lead. Ortiz connected on the game’s initial goal, 9:03 into the contest.
Junior goalie Kolby Haecker earned his second shutout of the season, making five saves, including a pair of slick ones on point-blank shots.
“He’s a really solid keeper,” McKee said. “This is his first year starting and I have 100 percent confidence in him.”
Manchester finished with 15 shots on goal to the Cavemen’s five. The visitors also recorded 12 corner kicks to the hosts’ four.
“I think we can play better than this,” Kruschwitz said, “but we can’t complain. A win’s a win.”
The Squires are off until visiting Lakeland Christian on Tuesday.
