Triton Turnovers Spell Defeat, 35-7, To Bremen

The Trojans finished the night with eight turnovers, four on runs, three in the air, and one on a punt return.
“You can’t win ballgames with that many turnovers, especially against good teams, “ Triton head coach Rodney Younis said. “We’re gonna get back to work, and these are correctable things we can fix.”
The first 10:31 of the opening quarter of Triton’s 2021 Homecoming game started with each team leaving the field failing to convert on fourth down (Bremen twice, Triton once) until Triton fumbled with 1:29 on the first period clock.
Younis noted his team didn’t come out with a fast, energetic start required to beat a team like Bremen.
“We didn’t start out fast enough tonight,” Younis remarked. “We came out flat.”
Bremen senior signal-caller Ethan Nunemaker found sophomore Cody Czarnecki for a 13-yard pass in the flat for the game’s first score with three-tenths of a second left in the first stanza. Triton responded in the opening 16 seconds of the second period with Anthony Schuh’s breakaway 67-yard scoring run tying the contest at seven apiece.
Bremen used counters and off-tackle runs on six plays of its seven-play drive before sophomore Lance Moser hit paydirt from the five-yard line at the second frame’s 6:53 mark. Moser had 23 of the Lions’ 29 yards on the short-distance drive.
Defensive back Reese Greene (two picks on the night) returned his first interception of the evening to the Triton 39-yard line 65 seconds after their second TD. A fumbled Triton punt return at their own 14-yard line after a solid Trojan defensive stand, however, afforded the guests another touchdown on a five-yard Ashton Shively score to push Bremen ahead 21-7.
Bremen added to their irreversible lead, on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Nunemaker to Shively to lead 28-7 at halftime.
The Schuh brothers (Anthony and Trace) were a two-headed workhorse in the first two series of the second half with 11 carries for 68 yards. These were Triton’s best two drives at this point in the game, but they were snuffed by two Bremen interceptions (by Greene, and Mikel Rogers respectively).
“We came out in the second half and fought,” Younis said. “But turnovers killed us.”
Despite the host’s ball security woes, Younis’s squad only gave up one score in the second half while Bremen kept its “ones” on the field until the late fourth quarter. Lion tight end Cole Taylor’s 18-yard reception for a touchdown was Nunemaker’s third TD pass of the evening with 3:25 left in the third stanza. It was the lone second-half tally, punctuating the 35-7 county rival’s effort to spoil Triton’s 2021 Homecoming fray.
Triton’s second longest drive of the evening, 59 yards, abruptly ended at 4:03 in the final quarter on another fumble.
Cameron Fairchild’s parents, in a pregame ceremony at midfield, were presented with a white Bremen Jersey bearing number 57. The visiting school district raised over $1,000 for Cameron’s family.
Triton (2-2, 1-1 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference) travels to Culver Community High School Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
