Grace drops home opener to Taylor

All three sets of the 3-0 sweep were tightly contested, including two sets which went to extra points.
In the first set, the score was tied 10 times as the teams struggled to gain separation. Taylor found its stride late, grabbing a 23-18 lead.
Grace faced a 24-21 deficit, but two kills by Anna Frey and another from Cassadi Colbert tied the score at 24-24 to force extra points.
The Trojans recovered, however, producing a kill and an ace on the next two plays to win 26-24.
Frey had five kills in the set, but Taylor hit at a .229 percentage as a team, their highest rate of the match by a considerable margin.
Grace maintained a small lead for much of the second set. A kill from Frey put Grace ahead 24-22 and on the verge of leveling the match.
But Taylor showed its resolve, notching three straight kills to snatch momentum. The Trojans would not be thwarted late, pulling out a 28-26 win.
Grace shook off the second-set disappointment with a dominant start to the third set. Grace claimed an 8-0 lead.
But the Lady Lancers’ offense fell silent over the next portion of the set. Taylor went on a 10-2 run to stun Grace and tie the score at 10-10.
Grace still managed to hold the lead at 15-12, but the Trojans used a 9-2 surge to pull ahead. Taylor held on late to secure the sweep with a 25-21 win.
Grace’s offense managed 32 kills on a .112 percentage, while Taylor had 51 kills on a .147 percentage. Frey led Grace’s attack with eight kills and 10 digs, and Alisha Leffring produced 6 kills, 3 solo blocks and 1 block assist.
Jenna Mueller tallied 5 kills, 1 solo block and 6 block assists, Riley Owens had a double-double with 13 assists and 10 digs, and Gina Novotny had 16 digs.
The Lady Lancers will play a weekend tournament at Bethel, taking on No. 24 Cornerstone and Indiana Tech on Friday as well as Concordia and Cumberland on Saturday. On Wednesday, Grace will return home to host Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
