HANOVER – The Manchester University football team suffered a road Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference defeat at Hanover College on Saturday.

The Panthers racked up 674 yards of total offense while limiting the Black & Gold to just 66 yards of offense en route to a 33-0 victory.

The Panthers ran for three scores and were led on the ground by quarterback Matthew Weimar’s 117 yards. Shawn Coane added 90 yards and a score on the ground. Weimar was also lethal in the air, throwing for 369 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Jared Frank hauled in 6 passes for 134 yards and a score.

Hanover possessed the ball for more than 36 minutes in Saturday’s contest.

Willis Sands Jr. led Manchester with a career-high 14 total tackles on the day. He also broke up a pass. Jalen Masden filled the stat sheet with 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery against the Panthers. Josue Castro added nine tackles against Hanover.

Manchester (2-6, 2-3 HCAC) will look to get back into the win column next weekend when it travels to Bluffton University in Ohio.



Spartans Clinch 1st HCAC Berth Since 2016

NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester University volleyball team honored its senior captain Samantha Campbell on Saturday afternoon with an on-court Senior Day ceremony ahead of its match against Mount St. Joseph.

Riding the emotion of Senior Day, the Spartans played well against the Lions in opening set, building as big as a six-point lead en route to a 25-22 triumph.

Mount St. Joseph (18-8, 8-1 HCAC) settled themselves and went on to claim the next three sets by tallies of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-20 for the four-set victory.

Halle Planck led Manchester with 13 kills and three solo blocks while Samantha Campbell and Joy Maze  added nine kills.

Jordan Holland led Manchester with 29 assists while Helaina Walters  paced the Spartans with 19 digs.

Grace Young (12) and Emily Abshire (11) led MSJ in kills. Sam Buschur paced the Lions with 34 assists. Three different Lions finished in double figures in digs.

Despite the loss, the Spartans (11-15, 3-6 HCAC) clinched the No. 6 seed in next week’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament – marking Manchester’s first conference tournament appearance since 2016. The Black & Gold have orchestrated a 10-win improvement this season.

The Spartans will travel to No. 3 seed Transylvania University on Wednesday November 3 for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Pioneers.

The Lions of Mount St. Joseph will be the No. 2 seed and will earn a first round bye in this year’s HCAC Tournament.



Lohman Claims Individual HCAC Crown As Spartans Earn 9th HCAC Title

SHELBYVILLE – Fifth-year Elizabeth Lohman led an excellent team performance by the Manchester University women's cross country program at the 2021 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon.

The three-time HCAC Athlete of the Week ran to an individual HCAC crown after winning Saturday's race with a top time of 23:37.2. Lohman became MU's first individual champion since Hannah Wappes won the individual title at the 2019 HCAC Championships. The Spartans claimed their ninth HCAC title and their first conference crown since 2019 after posting a team score of 41 on Saturday afternoon.

Lauren Smith (5th – 24:29.4), Fiona Frost (7th – 24:51.7), and Hannah Brubaker (8th – 24:52.1) all added top 10 placements for the Black & Gold.

Sarah Rohr added a 20th-place finish for Manchester after posting a time of 26:07.2.

Lohman, Smith, Brubaker, and Frost all earned All-HCAC honors while Rohr picked up Honorable Mention All-HCAC recognition on Saturday.

Rose-Hulman came in second-place after posting a team score of 72, while Hanover (83) and Anderson (127) placed third and fourth.

Head Coach Brian Cashdollar was named the HCAC Coach of the Year on the women's side. Cashdollar has now won 21 HCAC Coach of the Year awards during his time at Manchester and has guided the Spartan cross country programs to a combined 16 HCAC crowns.

Spartans Earn Runner-Up Finish At HCAC Championships

SHELBYVILLE – The Manchester trio of Thomas Richardson, Enrique Salazar, and Connor Havens led the Black & Gold men's cross country team to a runner-up team finish at the 2021 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Richardson (Ladoga, Ind./Southmont) was this year's HCAC Individual Champion after winning Saturday's race with a top overall time of 26:28.8. Salazar (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) finished right behind his junior counterpart, placing second overall with a time of 26:46.6. Havens added a fifth-place finish for the Black & Gold after clocking a time of 27:08.7.

Dylan Leininger (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) also added a top-15 finish on Saturday afternoon, placing 14th with a time of 28:18.3.

Richardson, Salazar, and Havens all garnered All-HCAC honors while Leininger earned Honorable Mention All-HCAC recognition. Richardson's individual title marked the third straight individual conference title won by a Spartan – he follows Enrique Salazar (Spring 2020) and Lucas Fontanez (2019). Manchester has won eight individual titles since 2008.

The Quakers of Earlham College won this year's conference championship after posting a team score of 61. The Black & Gold were a close second with a team score of 67. Transylvania placed third with a team score of 85, while Rose-Hulman finished fourth with a team score of 90.
