By Staff Report-

On Thursday, Warsaw Community High School senior Kendyl Silveus took home first place at the USF Creative Arts 45th Annual High School Art Exhibition.

Her piece, “Frog Crossing,” netted her gold. Frog Crossing reflects both the whimsy of her art and the skills she has developed in her art classes, according to a news release from Warsaw Community Schools.

Silveus said, “When I created ‘Frog Crossing,’ I never expected it to win anything. I thought it was great, for sure, but it was my first experience with printmaking, and I was a bit nervous about it. Seeing the news that I’d won something was awesome. It certainly fires you up, makes you excited to keep going with what you do. I’m very glad ‘Frog Crossing’ was recognized at this exhibition.”

Last semester, Silveus and her Drawing 2 class focused on various printmaking methods. “Frog Crossing” is a linoleum print, a method that involves carving out a plate, covering it in ink and wiping the ink away in order to achieve the desired tones. After several inking attempts, Silveus finally settled on one. Art teacher Don Swartzentruber requested that Silveus send the print to contests, allowing for Silveus to place at the USF Exhibition.

Silveus is a senior at WCHS. She enjoys literature, foreign languages and the arts, the release states. Silveus plans to attend college next year and major in English literature with a focus in creative writing. In her downtime, Silveus spends time with her family and bakes.
