Klam’s Discount Store opened Jan. 16 at 221 N. Main St., North Webster.
“I carry a little bit of everything. From antiques to new to small appliances. Furniture,” Sroufe stated. “I normally mark it, everything, from 30 to 60% off retail price. Even then, I still negotiate with people. My regulars come in and negotiate. They call me the Negotiator because I like to have with what I’m doing. I wanted it to be a different kind of style, not a regular ‘gotta be serious’ kind of store.”
Every day, he keeps learning as it’s all new to him. And every week, customers can find stuff they didn’t see the week before, he said.
He also sells stuff online at eBay and the marketplace on Buy, Sell, Trade. Mainly, though, his stuff is sold through the store.
“I try to be here for the community,” he said. Because of all the lakes in the area, he decided to call his business Klam’s (a slight spelling change from the word clam). “It’s something different.”
On the wall next to the front door are wooden signs that he customizes to whatever the customer is looking for. They’re done by wood burn, and it takes about a week to make one. There is no size limitation. “It just depends on what the back order is. Right now, I’ve got four in the works. It usually takes 30 to 40 hours to do one sign, but that’s just my passion. I love doing them,” he said. Orders for the signs can be placed at the business.
He also sells pocket knives. “I really do sell about anything that is legal,” Sroufe said.
Hours for Klam’s are: closed, Monday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
