INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace’s men’s basketball team could not pull off the upset of No. 18 Marian on Wednesday.

Grace is in the midst of a daunting slate of five straight ranked opponents. On Saturday Grace hosts archrival No. 11 Bethel at 1 p.m.

Grace shot 45 percent from the floor, slightly better than Marian’s 44 percent. But the Lancers made only 4 of 17 (24 percent) from beyond the arc.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair. The score was tied eight times in the half.

Grace opened up a 14-10 lead after a fastbreak basket by Haden Deaton.

The Knights (10-4, 6-4 CL) rallied in front with a 12-2 run, and Grace trailed 37-33 at halftime. Marian did not commit a turnover in the first half, allowing the hosts to take eight more field goal attempts. Conversely, Grace had seven turnovers as a team before halftime.

Grace, who had not made a 3-pointer before halftime, saw its shooting hit the mark shortly into the second half.

Cade Gibbs, Haden Deaton and Frankie Davidson each buried a 3-pointer in the first three minutes of the half. Two minutes later, Matt Jennings scored in the paint to put Grace ahead 48-47.

Unfortunately for the Lancers, Grace did not score again for nearly five minutes. The Knights seized an eight-point edge and never trailed again.

Grace continued to apply pressure on the Knights, slicing the margin down to three on a triple from Jakob Gibbs with 7:13 remaining.

But Grace again came up empty, hitting a three-minute drought which allowed Marian to regain composure.

The Knights sank 10 free throws over the final few minutes to ice the victory.

Jake Wadding finished 16 points and eight rebounds, and Deaton tallied 12 points.

Davidson notched 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assist and 1 block before fouling out, and Jakob Gibbs scored eight off the bench.

Elijah Malone finished with eight points and six rebounds, and Jennings chipped in six points and five assists.
