The store had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday with the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce to celebrate its Jan. 15 opening.
Biryani Kitchen, which serves authentic Indian food and opened a year ago, is a family-run business, owner Siva Kumar said Tuesday. They opened the Indian grocery store two weeks ago after they had success at their restaurant and knew there was a need for the ingredients.
“There are a lot of Indian families that live here,” Kumar said. “So this meets their Indian grocery needs.”
Kumar said most Indians cook at home and would have to travel to South Bend or Fort Wayne to get what they need to cook. For bulk foods they’d have to travel to Chicago.
It’s been a good turnout since their opening earlier this month, Kumar said, with more than 100 customers in the first three days.
The store sells lentils, cookies, Masala items with instructions, along with Indian fresh vegetables that get delivered every Thursday from Chicago. In the future, the grocery will expand its fresh vegetable section into their walk-in cooler.
The grocery is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Kumar said it’s not atypical for people who are eating in the restaurant up front to then walk back to the grocery afterward and get some items to take home.
Chamber President and CEO Rob Parker said it’s always good to see growth in the community and Biryani’s Kitchen has done great.
“People can come and try new things, and it’s great we have diversity in Warsaw,” Parker said.
