The cafe has been open since Nov. 26, 2019, Leon Oswalt said. “And we bought the old J & W Bakery Aug. 30, 2019.”
Friday afternoon, the North Webster and Kosciusko Chambers of Commerce held a joint ribbon-cutting ceremony for the business at 720 S. Main St., North Webster.
Dorinda Oswalt, owner, said the bakery offers doughnuts, brownies, cookies, cupcakes, cakes and “we’re known for our big cinnamon rolls.” They offer pies to order. Types of cookies include chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, peanut butter, applesauce, honey and more, she said. Leon said they supplied 4,000 cookies to Wildman Business Group for their customers this past Christmas.
Orders can be called in at 574-834-7800, but Leon said they’re working on taking orders online. He suggested a week’s notice on big orders would be helpful. Carry out, curbside and delivery are available.
Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday; 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for the bakery and cafe.
Of course, if you stop in to the bakery, you might as well stop in for a meal, too. Or vice versa.
Leon said the cafe has a full breakfast menu.
“We make our own homemade sausage gravy every day. It’s not out of a can, it’s not out of a bag. It’s homemade every day,” he said. “Just like grandma used to make.”
Oswalt offers hand-breaded tenderloins, “which are cut fresh from the loin here,” Leon said. “We pound them out ourselves. Our own breading. Our chicken tenders, chicken bites are cut fresh from the chicken breast. We do our own breading for those.”
Fridays are all-you-can-eat fish. The fish baskets are pollock. “We use our own beer batter for that,” Leon said. “It’s what I learned many, many years ago from my father.”
He said they try to do as much homemade as they can.
“We’ll have beef & noodles, chicken & noodles. Those are our own homemade egg noodles. We do homemade chilli. Homemade potato soup. When we do new special dinners, we’ll make our own yeast rolls. Our hamburgers are all half-pound burgers, hand patty. They’re fresh to put on the grill,” Leon said.
Breakfast is served all day for as long as the cafe is open, Dorinda said.
“It’s a family-owned (business),” Leon said. “And when I say family owned, it’s me and my wife, three of our kids are in and out of here all day, except when they’re in school. And then we have our oldest son, when he’s home from college, he works in here with us.”
