Lady Tigers Fall On Road At Homestead

A disastrous third quarter cost the Warsaw Lady Tigers a chance to top 11-5 Homestead on the road Tuesday night.

The Lady Spartans torched Warsaw 17-0 in the third period, only the fifth time in school history the Lady Tigers had been held scoreless in a quarter.

But despite the brutal third quarter scoring drought, Warsaw continued to fight. The Lady Tigers’ determination and toughness was never in question despite the game getting out of hand.

“Obviously we were not as sharp and focused as we needed to be in the third quarter but that’s on me,” said Warsaw Head Coach Lenny Krebs. “We keep making the same mistakes and we have things we need to fix and we have just two games to go to get that done before sectionals.

“We didn’t fight for each other the way we needed to tonight but at least we have a short break now before Concord on Saturday,” Krebs added.

The Lady TIgers were coming off a painful loss to Goshen on Saturday that left a bad taste in their mouths but despite what the score would indicate, responded nobly against a tough Homestead team that had won the past three meetings between the two schools.

Warsaw’s top three-point threat, Kacilyn Krebs, was unavailable for the game due to a neck injury suffered against Goshen. The Lady Tigers were also hampered by two early fouls on Audrey Grimm that resulted in her spending most of the first and second periods on the bench.

The game’s first quarter was a battle of the bigs, with Homestead’s Ayanna Patterson and Warsaw’s Abby Sanner doing nearly all of  the scoring.

Patterson, Homestead’s  6’3 junior star averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, scored the game’s first points and continued to be a problem for Warsaw the entire game. She and Sanner, the Lady Tigers’ own 6’2  junior front court standout, countered with an inside bucket of her own and the battle was on. A very slow scoring quarter with solid man-to-man defense by both sides saw the score 6-6 at the end of the period.

Three-pointers by Kensie Ryman, Kendall Wayne and Bailie Stephens helped keep Warsaw close in the second period that saw Patterson begin to show her dominance. Matching treys by Homestead allowed the Lady Spartans to pull away to a 23-15 lead at halftime.

The second half saw Homestead catch fire and extend their lead to 40-15 while holding the Lady Tigers scoreless for the quarter. Patterson displayed a number of Division 1-caliber moves, leading the Lady Spartans with 10 points in the period.

Stephens finally got Warsaw back in the scoring column again with six minutes to go in the game. Ryman then connected on three consecutive three-pointers to cut Homestead’s lead to 46-26 but with just over three minutes to go, Homestead’s lead was insurmountable. Warsaw scored twice more to make the final count 46-30.

Warsaw was led in scoring by Ryman who drilled four three-pointers for 12 points. Wayne and Stephens had five apiece while Sanner scored four. Ava Wetzel and Lauren Grose had two points apiece. Homestead was led by Patterson with 20, one point under her average.

Homestead also won the junior varsity game 33-27.
