WARSAW — A championship girls basketball season can still happen for Warsaw.

It’s just that the Lady Tigers will need some help for a piece of Northern Lakes Conference hardware.

Outpointing Warsaw 22-7 in the third quarter at the Tiger Den Saturday, Jan. 16, Goshen beat the Tigers 49-38.

With the program’s second-ever win in Warsaw (the other came in 1981), the RedHawks moved to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in the NLC with two conference games to play — Jan. 23 vs. NorthWood and Jan. 28 vs. Mishawaka. Goshen has not won the conference since 1987.

The Lady Tigers, which led 7-6 and 14-12 at the end of the first two quarters and last held an advantage at 16-15 in the second minute of the third period, fell to 14-4 and 5-1. Warsaw has one NLC game left — Jan. 23 at Concord.

Of course, the RedHawks and Tigers could meet again in the IHSAA Class 4A Goshen Sectional the first week of February.

“(Goshen) picked up the intensity and we didn’t match their intensity in the second half and that’s something we’re going to have to do to get to the championship level,” said Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs. “We have to be disciplined. I thought we were in a little bit of panic mode at times.

“Defensively, we caused them some issues early on with some pressure. But they adjusted and handled it well.”

Goshen outscored Warsaw 13-0 on second-chance shots and held 35-19 rebounding advantage. Tyra Marcum pulled down 17 rebounds and Brynn Shoup-Hill eight for Goshen.

“We have to finish possessions with rebounds,” said Krebs. “That’s something we have to get right.

“This was an opportunity. Obviously, (Goshen) is in the driver’s seat when it comes to conference. There’s still a championship out there if this one doesn’t materialize.”

Krebs gave credit to Goshen for its defensive effort slowing down his team.

“We didn’t get good ball movement due to the angles of how they played us,” said Krebs, the former RedHawk head coach. “We got some good looks offensively — even in the second half. We just didn’t shoot the ball well.”

Goshen coach Shaun Hill knew that he would see heat from Tiger defenders.

“We prepared for us going at pressure and trying to be the aggressor offensively,” said Hill. “We started to break the man-to-man press a little better (in the third quarter).”

Shoup-Hill, the coach’s daughter, bunched 10 of her game-leading 22 points and Marcum tallied seven of her 16 in the third quarter for Goshen.

It was Senior Night at Warsaw the three members of the Class of 2021 — Audrey Grimm, Kensie Ryman and Kendall Wayne — were recognized before the game.

Ryman produced eight points and five steals in 30 minutes, Grimm four points in 28 minutes, Wayne two points and two steals in 25 minutes.

Junior Abby Sanner netted eight of her team-high 12 points in the second half. She also had six rebounds, four blocks and three steals in 32 minutes.

Jimtown visits Goshen and Warsaw goes to Homestead, both Tuesday, Jan. 19.
