On Tuesday, Jan. 5, the Times-Union received an email from a reader stating he heard that Stock + Field was closing permanently in March. The newspaper contacted the local store’s manager on Wednesday, Jan. 6, who only would say, “No comment.” He also could not provide contact information for anyone at the corporate headquarters.
Attempts to reach anyone at Stock + Field’s corporate headquarters by email and telephone were unsuccessful. Other newspapers in Indiana and Illinois reported they were unsuccessful in getting a comment from corporate headquarters.
City of Warsaw Economic Development Coordinator Jeremy Skinner was asked via email on Wednesday, Jan. 6 if he had head anything at that time about Stock + Field closing. He responded that he did not know if they were closing, but he wouldn’t be surprised given the retail market and COVID.
Then sometime Sunday, on the Stock + Field website, Chairman and CEO Matthew F. Whebbe released a statement, saying, “After more than 55 years, Stock + Field (formerly known as Big R stores) is closing its doors at all 25 locations. There have been many challenges in 2020 and Stock + Field was not immune to them. S + F has partnered with providers of new merchandise and will be selling items at massive discounts in the coming weeks. Even (and especially) in a pandemic, we believe the customer should get some wins.”
After thanking employees and loyal customers, Whebbe’s statement also says, “We hope to reopen some stores at some point in the future.”
It concludes with a link to www.donlinrecano.com/sft, which provides general information from the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Minnesota. The bankruptcy was filed Sunday, with a first-day hearing scheduled for today, Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. Central Time.
In July 2019, Big R Stores announced it was changing its name to Stock + Field. The retailer had operated under the Big R Stores name since 1964 when Bill and Pat Crabtree opened the first store in Watseka, Ill. Since then, the company grew to 25 locations across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.
