WARSAW – For the second consecutive night, Warsaw hoops dropped the championship game of its holiday tournament on the Tiger Den floor. On Wednesday, it was the boys side dropping a tough one to Fort Wayne Dwenger. On Thursday, it was the Lady Tigers who were unable to finish off the holiday tourney with a win, falling 63-57 to Garrett. The loss drops Warsaw’s record to 11-5 this winter.

The Lady Tigers started the game on a tear, and things looked to be going their way for the night after an 8-0 run in the first four minutes of the game. But the Lady Railroaders were quick to answer the bell with a gut punch of their own, answering with a 10-2 run just moments later to tie the game up at 10. Both sides would trade buckets for the remainder of the quarter, and would go into the second knotted up at 16.

By staying in the game after the initial Warsaw run, Garrett had the prime opportunity to seize momentum in the second quarter, and seize it did. The Lady Railroaders were unconscious from three-point land, and made plenty of them in the period. An and-one play by senior Bailie Stephens cut the lead down and looked to swing some momentum back in Warsaw’s direction, but a Garrett buzzer-beater threw it out the window, and gave the visitors a 30-25 halftime lead. Stephens would finish with nine points and five rebounds.

In the third quarter, Garrett really began to dominate defensively, while still making a plethora of shots. The Lady Railroaders would combine for 12 made threes in the game to Warsaw’s seven. Four of the seven Warsaw threes belonged to Kacilyn Krebs, who would finish with 14 points. Krebs would be noticeably absent in the second half, for an undisclosed reason. Coach Lenny Krebs was unavailable to comment after the game. Going into the fourth quarter, Garrett would hold a 45-37 lead.

The Lady Tigers would give Garrett one final run in the final quarter, and what a run it was. Down 47-38, Warsaw would rally to tie the game up at 47, and eventually take the lead at 50-47. Fundamental to the run was senior Abby Sanner, who would score eight straight for the Lady Tigers on her way to finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. But the run would be the final highlight of the game for Warsaw, as Garrett would answer with a 9-0 run of its own that would push the game out of reach.

Warsaw plays its next game against Northridge Saturday, Jan. 8.
