Costly Droughts Keep Tippecanoe Valley From Defeating Peru

AKRON – In a game of runs, Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball was at the receiving end of the two biggest ones of the game. The end result: a 54-46 loss to Peru in a tightly contested Three Rivers Conference match up.
In a close game that featured four lead changes and three ties an 8-0 3rd quarter run for the Tigers and an 11-2 run in the 4th proved to be the difference in a loss that brings the Vikings record back below .500 to 2-3.
Both teams started the game slowly on the offensive end. Peru was able to score five quick points, but was held to just three more for the remainder of the quarter. Valley was only able to muster six points in the first quarter, all scored by senior Braden Shepherd. Shepherd would lead the Vikings in scoring with 13 points on the night.
The second quarter would be a little more fruitful for the Viking offense. The team would score eight points in the first two and a half minutes of the period to take its first lead of the game. A closely contested quarter would follow, containing three lead changes. Tippy Valley would take a two-point lead into the halftime locker room.
The Vikings offensive struggles would return in the 3rd quarter, resulting in the 8-0 Peru run that would give the Tigers the lead they wouldn’t surrender for the remainder of the contest. The game would head to the 4th quarter with the visitors up four.
In this fourth quarter, the game slowed down significantly. In a game that featured a fair amount of foul calls throughout, the final period of the game turned into free throw practice, with the first two minutes of the quarter taking almost 15 in real time. With the Vikings trailing by six and time running out, the Valley faithful were witness to one final burst from sophomore Riley Shepherd, who made two three-pointers in a row to tie the game. Riley would finish with 12 points on four made three-pointers.
But that would be as close as Valley got, as Peru answered with an 11-2 run to ice the game. The Vikings were victorious in the junior varsity game, winning 48-28. Nathan Parker had 16 points.
Next up for Tippecanoe Valley is a conference game on the road against Whitko Friday night.
