The giveaway is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 18 at JB’s Furniture, 2101 E. Center St., Warsaw, while toys last.
Brandon Blair, co-owner of Professional Roofing Solutions, 3562 E. U.S. 30, Warsaw, said they donated $10,000 to buy about 400-500 toys at an average cost of $20-$25 per toy.
“We’re going to do it outside just in reverence of COVID. We’re going to have a Santa Claus there, so when kids come, they’re going to be able to sit on Santa Claus’ lap, take a picture with him, tell Santa what they want for Christmas and they’ll be handed a wrapped gift for their age group and sex. And then there’s going to be free cocoas for all the parents,” he said. Cookies also will be provided.
The event is a way to celebrate the holidays together.
“I know that COVID has kind of taken us apart, as a nation, a world. (We’re) just trying to bring that back together,” Blair said.
Children only have to show up to receive a gift, while supplies last. They do have to be present to receive one.
“I have some other donors that might be giving some money, so we might be able to take care of more kids. But we’re just going to be able to give away gifts until they’re all gone,” Blair said.
Growing up, he said his family was very rich in love but didn’t have money so they would have Secret Santas every year.
“The community took care of us, so (we’re) just wanting to give back,” Blair said. “We’re the third largest roofing contractor in northern Indiana, the number one rated, so we’ve been quite successful.”
He said Professional Roofing Solutions & Construction does “a bunch of stuff” from a food drive at Thanksgiving, a Riley Children’s Hospital benefit to a free food giveaway and a communitywide scavenger hunt with a $5,000 prize for the winner.
“We plan on being very community-oriented. They’re going to know who we are,” Blair stated. “We found stability in our success, we’re just definitely going to give back. Warsaw, Kosciusko County, is just a really nice community. They’ve been good to us.”
For the giveaway, he said they just went shopping and bought “a couple dump trucks” worth of toys. Friends and family helped wrap the gifts, as well as helped organize the Dec. 18 event.
The toys will be wrapped so the boys and girls don’t know what they’re getting until they unwrap them.
“I just wanted to do it that way that way they weren’t like, ‘I wanted that one’ and ‘I want that one,’ and just get a random one. I didn’t want to start any kind of quarrel between the kids,” Blair said.
Mark Liebner, Professional Roofing Solutions co-owner, said the gifts will be age-specific and gender-specific.
Blair said one child might get a box of Pokemon, another might end up with a telescope while another might receive a remote-controlled car.
“They’re going to be pretty nice gifts. You’ve got to think $20-$25 apiece. They’re pretty nice. This wasn’t for the publicity. It’s nice that Professional Roofing Solutions is involved, because that way it helps us to do more things like this in the future, but it’s mainly for the kids. They might not have the things at home. Not because their parents don’t love them, but because they might not have the income,” he said.
Liebner said, “The community helping us put roofs on their houses helps us to do more things like this as well.”
The Dec. 18 event will be held rain or shine. While it is free, Blair said they will be doing a food drive, too, so people can drop off nonperishable food items to be given to local food banks, if they want.
The cookies, chocolate milk and Santa Claus will remain on-site until 5 p.m., even if they run out of toys. If any toys remain after 5 p.m., they will be donated to schools to give to less fortunate children.
