Triton’s Offense Explodes In Win Over Lakeland Christian

BOURBON – It was a “blink and you miss it” type of night at the Trench Tuesday night, as both the Triton and Lakeland Christian boys basketball teams treated fans to a high scoring affair. Neither team wasted much time setting up its offense, but both made the most of its opportunities, scoring points in droves. In the end, it was Triton who would emerge from the non-conference shootout with a 79-60 victory. The Trojans improve to 3-1 this winter, while the Cougars fall to 3-2.
From the opening tip, it was clear not much defense was going to be played. Both teams got off to red-hot starts from the field, leading to a 21-21 score after the opening period. Early on for LCA, it was a two-headed monster of Hunter Rice and Landon Gause, who shouldered the bulk of early scoring duties for the Cougars. Rice would finish with 12 points, while Gause would lead all scorers in the game with 21 points.
The second quarter is where Triton began to separate. Both teams shot incredibly well from the field, but the Trojans were a little bit better from deep. Triton sunk four three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the game, eight in the first half. Bruce Johnson made three, finishing with eleven points. Cole Shively made a pair, finishing with 13. Going into the halftime locker room, Triton was up 41-34.
The three-point barrage continued in the third quarter, as Triton began to separate for good. Both Caden Graham and Ashton Oviedo made a couple, and the rout was on. Both players finished with 17 points. In the quarter, Oviedo was sent to the free throw line after a made three for a chance at a four-point play. He sunk the free throw, and the crowd erupted. It was the senior’s 1,000th career point. Triton led 62-48 going into the final quarter.
The Cougars weren’t able to get any closer. LCA cooled off substantially after its hot start, but the Trojans didn’t. Triton kept extending the lead until the subs came in. Another notable performance for Lakeland Christian came from Silas Gagnon, who finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Next up for Triton is a matchup with Pioneer Friday evening, while Lakeland Christian takes on North Miami Tuesday night.
