CARMEL, Ind. – The Manchester University football team will return to the gridiron next week against the Trine University Thunder. With the 2021 football season fast approaching, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its preseason poll and “Athletes to Watch” listing on Thursday morning.

In a vote amongst league coaches, Hanover College was slated to repeat as league champions this fall. The Panthers received 63 points and seven first-place votes in Thursday’s poll. Mt. St. Joseph picked up the other first-place and received 53 points in the HCAC Preseason Poll. Rose-Hulman was picked to finish third after earning 49 points.

Manchester earned 12 points.

Head Coach Nate Jensen will enter his sixth year at the helm of the Manchester football program this fall.

Five Spartans garnered “Athlete to Watch” honors from the HCAC office on Thursday.

Senior wide receivers Harrington Greer (South Bend, Ind./Riley) and Darren Lathrop (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) were selected as “Athletes to Watch.” Greer was a First Team All-HCAC selection last year. Greer has 949 career receiving yards and 14 career TDs. Lathrop has 72 career receptions for 794 yards entering this season.

The three other Spartans that were selected as “Athletes to Watch” by the league office were senior cornerback Jaquan Walker (Johnson, Fla./Interlachen), senior defensive tackle Jabari Webb (Villa Rica, Ga./Villa Rica), and junior defensive end Devontay Moore (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central).

Walker has been an integral part of the Manchester secondary the past two seasons. Walker was a Second Team All-HCAC performer in 2019 and was named Honorable Mention All-HCAC a season ago.

Webb garnered Honorable Mention All-HCAC honors last season after posting career-highs of 43 tackles and 5 tackles-for-loss. Webb will enter his senior campaign with 88 career tackles and 8 career tackles-for-loss.

Moore will look to return from an injury that sidelined him during the 2021 spring season. Manchester’s most dynamic defensive player, Devontay was a Second Team All-HCAC performer during his rookie season back in 2019 when he ranked 11th in the nation with 11.0 sacks. Moore was also named to a special D3football.com National Team of the Week during the Fall of 2020 after he posted 21 tackles, 4 tackles-for-loss, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 1 blocked kick in MU’s two fall contests against Trine and Adrian.

A young Spartan squad will open the new season on Thursday September 2 at home against Trine. Kick off from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 pm.

HCAC play will begin on October 2 with a road trip to Franklin.
