CARMEL – With the 2021 fall semester quickly approaching, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its preseason poll and “Athletes to Watch” listing for men’s cross country on Tuesday morning.

In a vote amongst league coaches, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was slated to repeat as conference champions, earning seven first-place votes and 97 points. Manchester earned the other three first-place votes and finished a close second with 93 points.

Earlham was picked to finish third year after earning 75 points, while Franklin (67 points), and Transylvania (57 points) rounded out the top half of Tuesday’s preseason poll.

Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Brian Cashdollar will be in his 22nd year at Manchester University. Cashdollar has guided the men’s and women’s cross country programs to a combined 15 HCAC titles. The Manchester men won their most recent HCAC title in 2019.

Three Spartans were selected as “Athletes to Watch” by the HCAC office.

Juniors Enrique Salazar and Thomas Richardson as well as sophomore Connor Havens  will look to be a formidable trio for Manchester this fall.

Salazar was the 2019 HCAC Newcomer of the Year and was the 2020-21 HCAC Individual Champion. Enrique owns the 16th fastest time in school history.  Richardson placed third after running a career-best 25:54 at last year’s conference championships. His time ranks 25th all-time at Manchester. Havens was the 2020-21 HCAC Newcomer of the Year after a runner-up finish at the league championships. His time of 25:46 stands 20th all-time at MU.

The 1-2-3 finish for the three Spartan standouts at last year’s HCAC Championships was the first time the feat had been accomplished since 2009.

Manchester will open the season on Wednesday September 1 when it hosts its Hokum Karem.
