PIERCETON – The Pierceton Heirloom Tomato Festival Aug. 28 will welcome Kim Lund as the guest heirloom tomato expert for the festival.

Lund is an avid seed collector and has more than 4,000 varieties from all over the world, including some of the rarest seeds in the United States. Her collection of seeds contains more than 630 varieties from Italy and some rare family heirloom seeds from Romania, according to a news release from Festival organizers. Lund is a noted seed steward and was gifted a collection of seeds by Martin Longseth, a longtime seed steward. A seed steward preserves and shares seeds to ensure agricultural diversity of regional seeds for future generations, the release states.

Lund is on the board of directors and co-founder of the Michigan Seed Library Network, which was started this year. Her co-founder is author Bevin Cohen from Small House Farm.

Additionally, a seed library for her community, which is housed at the White Pine District library, was initiated by Lund. Seeds are available for free through the library seed program. A story garden and a vegetable garden in honor of Longseth are in development. All vegetables will be donated to those in need in the community.

Another community outreach program she takes part in is the “Taste the Bounty” event held at the end of each harvest season. Her community is welcome to come and taste the food grown from the heirloom seeds that had been provided to the community, according to the release.

When not busy with all of her community endeavors as a seed expert, Lund and her husband have a cattle operation and farm 240 acres in Michigan. Together, they collect Oliver Tractors and take their collection to area tractor shows.

Lund will be available at the “question and answer” booth during the Pierceton Heirloom Tomato Festival on Aug. 28. The festival will be held in downtown Pierceton at Brower Park and the Old Train Depot.

The “question and answer” booth will be inside the Old Train Depot. Look for Lund at the booth from 10 to 11:30 a.m., noon to 1 p.m. and 2 to 3 p.m.

The festival kicks off with a 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. All other events will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
