Warsaw’s head volleyball coach Chandra Hepler clearly identified five of her six starters who will launch the 2021 season. The Tigers, returning eight athletes who started or had meaningful rotations from last year’s 22-9 Northern Lakes Conference championship season (7-0), will find out early in the season who among the remaining six athletes will rise to play key roles in 2021.

Hepler’s starters she readily identified were, Avery Hales (Jr. setter, 124 kills, 30 serving aces, 132 serving points, 36 blocks, 911 assists), Abby Sanner (Sr. middle hitter, 18 blocks), Kaylee Weeks (jr. outside hitter, 164 kills, 30 blocks), Melaina Hawblitzel, (so. outside hitter, 135 kills), and Kylie Smith (sr. libero, 41 serving aces, 226 serving points, 49 assists)

Abbie Porter, a senior setter and defensive specialist, also returns with 139 service points, and senior Cora West, another defensive specialist, joins the 2021 campaign with 109 service points from the prior season. Allison Heinrich, another returning senior, brings 108 kills to the table from her junior season.

The combination of the five named starters plus the three seniors competing for the sixth spot affords the Tiger volleyball squad the opportunity to season the team’s other seven athletes.

“Their experience and leadership on and off the court will be crucial to our success,” Hepler noted. “We have several players that are new to the varsity court this year.”

“(The new varsity athletes) will need to be led to fill some holes we have positionally this year,” Hepler continued. “Their experience will be critical to step up and be key players for us.”

The players Hepler noted who will round out the Tigers’ varsity roster are, defensive specialists Sadie Walden (sr.), Tianna Davis (jr.), and Delaney Silveus (jr.), middle hitters Madi Desenberg (jr.), and Leah Henderson (so.), and outside hitter Ava Silveus (jr.).

“Our strength is our serving and speed of play,” Hepler cited when asked about what the 2021 Tigers bring to the court. “We focus a lot on first ball contact. We play aggressive and with high energy.”

Warsaw will host Caston at 6 p.m. Thursday for a scrimmage, then travel to Fort Wayne Concordia Tuesday for its season opener.
