Downtown Warsaw To Be Busy Sept. 11

Downtown Warsaw will be a busy place on Sept. 11 with a 9/11 Remembrance parade, the farmer’s market, the John Dillinger Raid at the museum, the Kettleheads Home Brew Fest and the Taste of Kosciusko.

At Friday’s Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, Kosciusko Chamber President and CEO Rob Parker requested the closure of roads for the Home Brew Fest and Taste of Kosciusko. The roads to be closed from 1 p.m. Sept. 11 to the morning of Sept. 12 – with the two events scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. plus set-up and tear-down time – will be Buffalo Street from Main to Center streets and Center Street between Lake and Buffalo streets.

The Board of Works unanimously approved the road closures.

Parker said, “We want to do a Taste of Kosciusko and the Kettleheads’ Brew Fest in downtown Warsaw. So, as you know, Mayor, we have the anchors that go along Buffalo Street. We’d like to use the tent on Buffalo Street for the Kettleheads. Both events will go from 4 to 8 p.m. And then we’ll use Center Street for the Taste of Kosciusko. We’ll also be doing a cornhole tournament.”

He acknowledged there was a lot going on that day with the Dillinger Raid and the 9/11 Remembrance Committee’s parade. The parade is tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m.

Mayor Joe Thallemer asked Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory Chief Mike Wilson’s opinion about the road closure with everything going on, from the farmers market on Center Street, then the Kettleheads, the parade and then the Dillinger Raid on Indiana Street. Thallemer said looking at the map, the timing seemed to work that both Center and Main streets wouldn’t be closed down at the same time for no more time than it would take for the parade to move through.

“That is correct,” Wilson said. “We looked at that route since the route’s been changed. They’re going to go up and turn right on Main and go over to Lake, go back south. It’ll work out fine.”

He said if the fire trucks need to go out of Station No. 1, they can always go to the east, but they’ll be in the parade so they’ll be able to break off if there’s a call. During the rest of the time, he said the intersection will be open for east or west traffic for fire trucks, ambulances and law enforcement.

“It should work really well,” Wilson said.

Thallemer said he was “really excited to have this event downtown. It’s going to be fun. I’m thankful that the Chamber, the WCDC worked to get this downtown. Thank you very much.”

The Annual John Dillinger Raid is Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sept. 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. in downtown Warsaw. The two-day event will feature, among other things, a classic car show, food and craft vendors and special exhibits and tours at the Old Jail Museum, 121 N. Indiana St., Warsaw. The Kosciusko County Historical Society will host the event.
