Grace Women’s Tennis Starts Postseason With Win

The Lady Lancers beat Bethel 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the CL Tournament. Grace advances to the semifinals on Thursday, traveling to No. 2 seed Marian for a 4 p.m. match.
Tuesday started on a strong foot for Grace by sweeping the doubles’ courts. Dayana Ortega and Jayna Armstrong won 6-3 at No. 1, and Anna Graves and Ellie Hughes won by the same score at No. 2. Lauryn Riegsecker and Gretchen Adams had the easiest win 6-1 at No. 3.
Armstrong was nearly perfect (6-0, 6-1) at No. 2 singles. Graves (No. 3), Morgan Mast (No. 4) and Kiersten Martin (No. 6) had little trouble winning in straight sets.
Riegsecker had to scrap for her win at No. 5 singles. Riegsecker produced a 6-2, 1-6, 10-1 scoreline to wrap up the victory.
Grace takes on Michigan tournament
JACKSON, Mich. - Grace’s men’s golf team played its longest tournament of the fall to date with the Spring Arbor Invitational.
The Lancers placed seventh out of 14 teams over three rounds at the Grande Golf Club.
Noah Wright just missed a top-10 showing. The junior had the two lowest rounds of the tournament for Grace, carding 73-71-81 which placed 11th out of 68 golfers.
Camden Gongwer and Blake Lawson were the pictures of consistency across 54 holes. Gongwer’s score (80-76-77) varied just four strokes between rounds, and Lawson was even less with a two-stroke difference (78-79-77).
Payton Kelly finished with a 243, highlighted by a second-round 76, and Parker Wilburn ended the tourney with a 251.
The Lancers are next at the Bethel Invitational on Oct. 5-6.
Grace wins first tourney of year
JACKSON, Mich. - Grace’s women’s golf team picked up its first tournament win at the Pure Michigan Invitational.
The Lady Lancers dominated the field of six, placing four golfers in the top-five overall. Grace’s 305 was 30 strokes better than the second-place finisher Lawrence Tech (335).
Lucy Young and Carolyn Pacocha tied for the overall lead with a round of 74 with Young taking the medalist honor.
Rachel Harvey finished third in the field with a 77, and Rebecca Hawes was fifth with an 80. Abby Slabaugh rounded out Grace’s scoring with an 89.
On the B team, Olivia Shaw’s 87 and Abigail Fishel’s 88 paced the squad. Jalee Nunemaker (94), Brittney Klotz (98) and Julia Hildebrand (113) wrapped up the top five.
“We played very well today. I thought we drove the ball as well as any team I’ve ever watched,” said Grace head coach Denny Duncan. “This team is still young, and we’ve been inconsistent at times, but I’m excited about our potential. I believe we will continue getting better throughout the year.”
The Lady Lancers return to the course on Sept. 30 with the Valparaiso Invitational.
Grace handles Bethel in league tourney
WINONA LAKE - Grace’s men’s tennis team made quick work of Bethel on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament with a 7-0 sweep.
The Lancers (10-1), enjoying one of their best fall seasons in program history, will host the semifinals of the tournament on Thursday. Grace, the No. 2 seed, will host No. 3 Marian on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Grace secured the victory quickly during singles’ play. Fabricio Galvan (No. 3) and David Sandi (No. 4) only lost one game in their matches; Ramiro Candia (No. 2), Pavle Popovic (No. 5) and Mauricio Corty (No. 6) only dropped two games on their courts.
The only drama was saved for the top singles’ court. Max Rozas dropped the first set but found resolve to fight back 6-3 in the second set. Rozas’s momentum carried into the third set with a 10-6 victory. Rozas was spurred on by a robust cheering section, led by Grace’s men’s soccer team waiting for the start of their practice.
In doubles’ play, Galvan and Ivan Antinori battled to a 6-4 victory at No. 1. Jacob Gray and Candia cruised 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Kye Barrett and Ivan Savic won 6-0 at No. 3.
Harrington lauded as NAIA Setter of Week
WINONA LAKE - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tabbed Grace’s Gabbey Harrington as the national Setter of the Week on Tuesday.
On Monday, Harrington won the same award from the Crossroads League.
Harrington has played a pivotal role in Grace’s torrid start to the season. The senior is in her first season as the team’s full-time setter and has helped Grace to a 5-0 start.
Last week, she posted a double-double with 21 assists, 10 digs, 3 kills and 1 block assist to upset No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan 3-0.
A few days later she added 38 assists, 4 kills, 6 digs and 4 block assists in a road victory at Huntington.
Grace will take on the last unbeaten team on Wednesday, traveling to No. 1 Marian (3-0) for a 7 p.m. match.
Lady Lancers trounce Cardinals
WINONA LAKE - Grace’s women’s tennis team earned its third straight win thanks to a 7-0 sweep of Concordia on Monday.
The Lady Lancers will enter this week’s Crossroads League Tournament with a sterling 10-2 record (6-2 CL).
Grace earned the No. 3 seed in the tourney and will host Bethel on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The semifinals will be played Thursday with the championship scheduled for Saturday.
Anna Graves and Ellie Hughes each earned two points for Grace on Monday. Graves teamed up with Dayana Ortega to win 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and she also won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Hughes cruised 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and also combined with Gretchen Adams to win 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Addy Jarvis and Rachel Bognar blanked their opponent at No. 3 doubles to complete the doubles’ round.
Jayna Armstrong (No. 1), Morgan Mast (No. 4), Lauryn Riegsecker (No. 5) and Kiersten Martin (No. 6) all won in straight sets during singles’ play.

WINONA LAKE - Grace’s men’s tennis team blanked Trine 7-0 on Monday.
Fabricio Galvan, Ivan Antinori and Nicolas Graber were all involved in two points for Grace on Monday.
Galvan and Antinori won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Gruber teamed up with Max Rozas to win 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. Gruber battled to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, Galvan was almost perfect (6-1, 6-0) at No. 1 singles, and Antinori cruised 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.
Jacob Gray and Ramiro Candia completed the doubles’ sweep by winning 6-2 at No. 2.
Mauricio Corty picked up a straight set win at No. 2 singles, and Kye Barrett (No. 3) and Milan Savic (No. 6) also won in singles’ play.
