Concord Rolls Past Warsaw Tennis

The host Minutemen won every match in straight sets on the way to a 5-0 boys tennis victory over the Tigers on Monday night, putting a cap on Concord’s 7-0 Northern Lakes Conference dual season.
“They’re a tough team,” Warsaw coach Stacy Lind said. “My boys went out and fought for every point. You can’t ask for more than that, but Concord did what they needed to do to take the match, and they did a great job at it.”
The Minutemen improved to 13-3 overall to go with that sweep through the NLC. All three of their losses this season have come against ranked opponents.
The Tigers dropped to 4-10 overall, 3-4 in the league.
Martin delivered the most suspense on Warsaw’s behalf.
He jumped to a 3-0 first-set lead over Schraw at No. 2 singles on the strength of two service breaks and was still up as late as 5-4, but the Minuteman sophomore — who entered at 6-0 in conference play — rallied for a 7-5, 6-0 win.
The opening set at No. 1 doubles was also close, but Concord’s senior duo of Gavin Smith and Cayden Rohrer eventually ruled 7-5, 6-2 over Tiger junior Wil Boren and sophomore teammate Tristan Anderson. That wound up the evening’s longest match at 1 hour, 9 minutes.
At No. 2 dubs, Minuteman senior Brayden Newburn and junior partner Thomas Burkert scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Warsaw seniors Cole Rhodes and Michael Ray.
“I think the most encouraging thing today was not giving up,” Lind said of her team.
Concord cruised nonetheless at Nos. 1 and 3 singles.
Bryson Schrock downed fellow senior Hayden Anderson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, while Mitchell Whitehead topped Zachary Nicholoas 6-0, 6-0 in a battle of juniors at No. 3.
Schrock and Whitehead each moved to 6-1 in league play, as did the Smith-Rohrer combination. Newburn and Burkert are 5-2.
The Tigers head right back to the Concord courts on Wednesday and Thursday for the first two days of the NLC Tournament. Saturday’s finals are slated for Goshen.
“I do think they have improved over the season,” Lind said of her club, “and we have a young team. They’re coming out, giving all they have, working hard.”
Warsaw will follow up the conference tourney by hosting a five-team sectional, with Tippecanoe Valley, Wawasee, Whitko and Columbia City the other combatants.
“That’s my goal,” Lind said of whether she thinks her team will peak in the postseason, “but that’s ultimately up to the boys and what they bring to the courts.”
