MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Grace’s volleyball team had two straight road matches in the Crossroads League to open up the 2020 season.

The result was the same both times. Grace picked up its second consecutive sweep, blanking Mt. Vernon Nazarene 3-0 on Wednesday.

The match was a battle despite the 3-0 scoreline with two of the sets reaching extra points.

The opening set was a series of momentum shifts. Grace opened up the match with a 7-4 lead, but the Cougars ripped off nine unanswered points.

The Lady Lancers (2-0, 2-0 CL) eventually tied the score at 18, thanks to a 7-0 spurt with two aces by Brittany Baize.

MVNU seemed poised to take the first set, however, easing ahead 24-22. But Makaela Lochmueller provided a clutch kill to stop the first set point, and the Cougars had three straight errors down the stretch to give Grace a 26-24 win.

Grace led for nearly the entirety of the second set in a 25-18 victory. The Cougars were held to a negative hitting percentage (-.061) in the set thanks to Grace’s defense.

The third set was a classic back-and-forth affair. The sides continually traded turns in the lead as the teams clawed for any type of separation.

The Cougars found a slight lead late with a 23-20 advantage. MVNU went ahead 24-22, forcing Grace to stave off two more set points.

This time, Gabbey Harrington and Anna Frey provided back-to-back kills to send the game to extra points. On the next two plays, Lochmueller and Harrington teamed up for block points to secure Grace’s sweep at 26-24.

Cassadi Colbert had 10 kills and just one error to lead Grace, and fellow freshman Julia Nagy’s 15 digs led the squad.

Frey, the reigning Crossroads League Attacker of the Week, produced 6 kills, 9 digs and 2 solo blocks, and Kate Sperry tallied five kills.

Gina Novotny had 10 digs, Baize added eight digs, and Harrington finished with 25 assists, 6 digs and 2 block assists.

The Lady Lancers’ home opener is Saturday at home against St. Francis at 3 p.m.
