Apaches Win Relocated Game Over Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER —The Manchester Squires football team were set to face off against their county rival, Wabash, on Friday night at Alumni Field. The school unveiled through social media the new artificial turf being installed and video board a few days ago. However, it was not quite ready for a christening, so the venue was switched to Manchester Jr.-Sr. High School.

The Apaches made themselves feel right at home.

Backed by a five-touchdown performance from senior quarterback Joseph Leland, Wabash cruised to a 44-29 victory over the Squires at North Manchester.

“What we talked about with our guys is ‘How do we grow and move on from this?’” said Manchester head football coach Alyx Brandewie. “It’s a building process for us. We have just got to go back to work on Monday and continue to develop and clean up mistakes.

Leland tossed four touchdown passes—all to senior wideout Bryant Boggs—and also accounted for one rushing score.

“Wabash played a good football game tonight, and we have got to respond next week,” said Brandewie.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle. As Leland connected with Boggs, Manchester junior halfback Braxton Ream had himself a night with three rushing touchdowns.

After halftime, Wabash would get a quick score from Isaiah Eis, and they would also capitalize on a Manchester turnover to go up for good.

In the loss for the Squires, junior wideout Seth Gaerte notched a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, and also accounted for an interception in the first half.

The Squires look to get back in the win column next week, as they will host the Rochester Zebras. The Zebras, having their first two games cancelled because of COVID-19 concerns, played their first game of the season last night—a 28-7 loss to Whitko.

While that game is the only glimpse that coach Brandewie and his Squires will have on Rochester, he felt as though they need to reflect on themselves before they prepare for their next opponent.

“This week is a week for us to focus on us and what we do,” said Brandewie. “If the focus is on the disadvantages and the things you don’t have, I don’t know that we grow and develop and build the way that we need to win.”
