Tipp Valley Falls To Southwood

The Vikings were already coming in banged up, with the losses of senior offensive lineman Andy Hurd and junior fullback Hunter Eherenman from the previous week.
Southwood piled on more trouble.
On three first-half touchdown passes from senior quarterback Alex Farr, the Knights removed all doubt early on, as they retained the TRC championship for the fourth consecutive season with a 32-8 victory on Sherman Wagoner Field at Southwood High School.
“Coming into tonight, we knew that we were down four tailbacks, as well as four secondary players,” said Tippecanoe Valley head football coach Stephen Moriarty. “So, asking some kids to play out of position is sometimes very difficult against an experienced team that would do well against a normal, starting varsity team.”
Farr completed 11 of his 15 passes for 227 yards for the Knights (9-0 overall, 7-0 TRC). Senior wideout Carson Rich caught two of Farr’s touchdown passes, with fellow senior Dawson Filip hauling in the other.
In the loss for Valley (6-3 overall, 6-2 TRC), it was junior halfback Joel Cisneros who led the ground game with 63 yards rushing. Through the air, junior quarterback Branson McBrier was 3-for-9 for 37 yards and no touchdowns or turnovers.
Southwood did not turn the ball over, either. They also finished with 13 first downs to Valley’s 10. Only four penalties were assessed between the two teams.
The injury bug came back to haunt Valley, as they lost freshman Wade Jones and senior Johnny Gonsalez over the course of the game.
“Both are very crucial losses to the team,” said Moriarty. “We are just going to have to overcome a lot of injuries.”
The Vikings would earn their only points late in the fourth quarter. As the reserves would see playing time, freshman fullback Dalton Alber rumbled for 49 yards and a score, which would be his only carry of the game. He also earned a two-point conversion after the run. Defensively, Alber also tacked on two sacks.
“This gave some young kids some opportunities to show what they have,” said Moriarty.
Up next for the Vikings is the Class 3A sectional 26 opener versus South Bend Washington. Valley faced off against the Panthers a year ago in the opening round matchup, earning a 19-14 win at School Field in South Bend. This year’s version may have a different feel to it after the injury bug paid another visit.
“We have just got a lot of moving around to do for next week, just to make sure we have backups,” said Moriarty.
Southwood opens their Class 1A sectional run next Friday against county rival Northfield, whom they have previously beaten 25-8 back on Sept. 11.
