AKRON -- There were so many penalty flags thrown during last night’s football matchup between Tippecanoe Valley and Manchester fans in attendance were surely left wondering if Friday is the new laundry day.

Tipp Valley, now 6-2 after their 48-18 win, eventually showed why they were the heavy favorite going into the contest on a balmy Homecoming night but Manchester did not go down without a fight as the Squires just kept finding a way to make first downs.  The game sure seemed a lot closer than the score would indicate and Manchester definitely did not look like a 2-6 team, at least in the first half.

“The way we came out, we got things rolling but then all of a sudden things sort of bogged down,” Valley Head Coach Steve Moriarty said. “They scored right away and things got a lot tighter than they should have.”

The Vikings’ offensive line dominated, clearing the way for 424 yards of rushing for Valley's running backs. Another defensive shutout in the second half helped Tippecanoe Valley beat a solid Manchester team by a score of 48-18.

“In the second half, we started playing better defensively and we were able to start rolling a little bit,” Moriarty added. “I’m proud that we were able to get so many kids in. We had a lot of subs this game and they all did a really good job.

“As far as our starters, Jamasyn Virgil, Hunter Eherenman and our entire offensive line all did a really good job.”

Valley scored just 1:20 into the game on a 4-yard touchdown run by junior Joel Cisneros but Manchester answered with two consecutive TDs to take the lead 12-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. Tipp Valley bounced back in the 2nd quarter and outscored the Squires 22-6 to take a 29-18 lead into the half. After some defensive adjustments, the Vikings outscored Manchester 19-0 in the second half.

Leading the way for the Vikings was junior Jamasyn Virgil with 190 yards rushing on 14 carries and 3 touchdowns. Junior Hunter Eherenman rushed for 112 yards on 9 carries and a touchdown. Also scoring touchdowns on the night for the Vikings were junior Joel Cisneros with 2 rushing touchdowns. A rousing 12-yard touchdown romp by freshman QB Cody Eastgate, his first varsity score, provided the final margin of victory with 2:27 left in the final quarter.

An emphatic stop behind the line of scrimmage  by junior Braydn Poe resulted in a turnover on downs with 19 seconds left on the clock to seal the win for Valley.

Seth Gaerte, a junior, led Manchester on offense with 127 yards on 7 receptions with one touchdown. Fellow junior Blake Pohler tallied 71 yards on 6 receptions. Braxton Ream led Manchester on the ground with 39 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown.

Manchester was penalized 11 times for 74 yards while Tipp Valley received 8 flags costing them 81 yards. Turnovers were also a factor as Manchester suffered 2 fumbles and 4 interceptions compared to 3 fumbles and 2 interceptions for the Vikings.

Manchester was dominant through the air, despite the interceptions, as QB Brock Casper, a sophomore, connected 18 passes for 236 yards. Tipp Valley junior QB Branson McBrier hit on 3 passes for 9 yards.

“We just have to keep making sure we’re getting better each week with next week’s conference championship already here,” Moriarty added.

Tipp Valley will play for the TRC Title next Friday night at Southwood at 7pm.
