By Staff Report-

Each year, for at least 50 years, the country has celebrated National Small Business Week to recognize the contributions of entrepreneurs and small business owners in cities, town and states across America.

During the week of May 4-8, Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Northern Indiana will take the opportunity to honor, recognize and support the resilience of small businesses during these trying times. The BBB encourages everyone to join them.

BBB is encouraging small businesses to share their story of entrepreneurship and how they became small business owners. BBB will highlight these stories on its social media all week. Submit stories on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIN, or email [email protected].

BBB will celebrate #GivingTuesday, a global day of unity to take place today, as a response to need caused by COVID-19. BBB encourages everyone to support area charities, whether through monetary donations or volunteering. BBB is accepting donations for its #BBBFeedingtheFrontLines campaign at www.gofundme.com/f/bbb-feeding-the-frontline

BBB will continue to offer education and assistance to small businesses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic via a series of webinars and other resources and tools. BBB will host a joint webinar with the Indiana attorney general on Wednesday at 2 p.m., focusing on how business owners can avoid COVID-19 scams. Registration is at bbb.org.

BBB also plans to educate consumers on the importance of small businesses to communities. Watch the BBB’s Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN pages for facts, information and more each day.

BBB’s Thank You Thursday will promote the importance of saying thanks to small business that have impacted you. BBB will share messages of thanks from its employees on its social media channels on Thursday and encourage our fans to do the same.

Ways you can celebrate small businesses:

• Support: Patronize small, local businesses in a way you feel comfortable. Order online for curb-side or carry-out. Order gift cards to use at a later time if you can’t visit now.

• Reschedule, don’t cancel: If you’ve had to push off work on your hair, your home or your car – don’t cancel those appointments. Reschedule them so the small business owners know they can count on you later.

• Say thanks: Give your favorite local businesses a shout-out on social media or call them and tell them they’re doing a good job. Everyone enjoys being appreciated.

• Consider a small business first: With a big box options to choose from, be sure you check out local retailers, too.

• Volunteer your services: Think of skills you have that may benefit a small business and offer it up. Small businesses are often seeking services on a limited budget and may welcome volunteers.
