The Wyndham complex was owned by Shaffner & Shaffner, which was started by brothers Bruce and Steve Shaffner in the early 1980s, said Bruce. While not saying how much the complex sold for, Bruce said the current owners are Fortune One LLC.
“We had it up for sale, and the listing ran out. We decided we would just stay,” Bruce said. Then Fortune One LLC contacted the Shaffners in November “and said they had interest in the property.” The contract had been in negotiations since.
The reason the Wyndham Garden Hotel and Palette were sold was because the Shaffner brothers wanted to retire, Bruce said.
“Now, as my brother Steve is 72 years of age and myself 62, we found that it was time to enjoy the fruits of our labor,” Bruce said in a statement about the sale.
“We wanted the employees to be retained,” Bruce said, saying the approximately 92 employees were rehired immediately. The new owners had planned to keep things as they were before the coronavirus affected businesses and offices in the area. “It’s theirs, they can do what they want, but I think they plan to maintain the name.”
Bruce said Steve’s children don’t seem to have interest in running the business and he doesn’t have children of his own.
The building was built in 1971 as a Holiday Inn, Bruce said. He and his brother were not the original owners of the complex, as they bought it about 22 years ago.
After the purchase, they remodeled “the entire property and rebranded it to the Ramada Plaza Hotel,” according to Bruce. The Bennigan’s Grill and Tavern then moved in.
“As we continued with the hotel, we thought a name change was in order. That is when we rebranded it to Wyndham Garden Hotel. A few years later, after having Bennigan’s in place for 15 years, we wanted to upscale our property and added the Recovery Lounge as an adult bar. A year later, we opened Palette, an American Eatery. Our 22 years at the hotel was always about doing the right thing, either for our guest or our employees. We truly enjoyed this place,” Bruce said.
He said the name change to Wyndham Garden Hotel was in 2013.
“When we purchased the Holiday Inn, it was very run down and didn’t have the best of reputations, so we thought it was better, since we were doing all these renovations, to put a new name to it,” Bruce said.
“This is a bittersweet time for both of us. We miss our dedicated employees and loyal customers very much. Thanks for 40 years of memories you all have given both Steve and Bruce,” Bruce said in a statement.
