BOURBON — After a decisive victory Tuesday against West Central, the Triton boys basketball team looked to stay for at least one more night on their home floor. Standing in their way is LaCrosse, who drew a bye in the opening round of sectionals.

Paced by Ashton Oviedo’s 19 points, the Trojans dispatched the Tigers 55-26 Friday night at the Triton Trojan Trench.

“I talked to them before the game about coming out defensively and really sticking it defensively,” said Triton boys head basketball coach Jason Groves. “I did not think against West Central that we came out and really fought to contain. I thought tonight that we did that. So, it was nice to see them take that to heart and get after it defensively.”

Oviedo had a good supporting cast. In the win, Tyler Heckaman finished with nine points and six rebounds. Jared Bules was 3-for-4 from the floor and finished with seven points. Quentin Amsden’s six points came from beyond the arc, and Keegan Westafer finished with five points and four rebounds.

Triton (14-10) got out to a 18-5 lead in the first quarter, and never looked back. The Trojans were potent on offense, converting 51.2% of their shot attempts.

Defensively, the Trojans held the Tigers to 39.1%, putting up only 23 shot attempts. They also outrebounded LaCrosse 25-15.

“That’s one of our focuses—rebounding. We talked about not just defensive rebounding, but trying to get some offensive boards as well,” said Groves. “Our guys have been playing with confidence. At this point in the season, we know who we are, and we know our roles. It’s nice to see them come out and execute that and get it done.”

For LaCrosse (6-17), Kyle Gorski finished with a team-high four points. Ben Brust and Ben Garwood each finished with three points.

Tonight, the Trojans face Argos, who defeated Oregon-Davis 50-23 in the second sectional semifinal. Triton had defeated the Dragons 47-44 back on Feb. 6.

“Argos is just solid all around,” said Groves. “They are solid defensively, they are fundamental offensively. They take care of the ball and get great shots. You know what you are going to get when you play them. It’s nothing new, but we are definitely going to have to play them well if we are going to beat them.”

Tip-off for the sectional championship is set for 8 p.m.
