NORTH MANCHESTER – In a statement sent to parents before being released publicly Saturday, Manchester Community Schools and its athletic program shut down its off-season conditioning program due to two positive COVID tests.

After saying the school corporation has worked closely with the Wabash County Health Department in defining procedures and protocols for returning, the statement said “At this time, we have received a report that one athlete from our football team and one athlete on our boys basketball team have tested positive for COVID-19. We cannot share specific details about the exposure, but in an effort to keep everyone safe we are going to postpone our summer practices of all sports for the remainder of the summer. We have been advised to use ‘an abundance of caution.’ In doing so, we hope to launch fall sports on August 3rd, the first official day of practice.”

There are several student-athletes who are listed on both the football and boys basketball rosters for the 2019-20 school year, but Athletic Director Eric Screeton confirmed there are two separate cases.

The statement, issued jointly by Screeton and Superintendent Dr. Teresa Gremaux, continued:

“Athletes that worked out in a shared training group, including out morning Squire Hour, will be contacted by Indiana State Health Department or the local Wabash (County) Health Department. It is also recommended that anyone who has been contacted be tested.

“In the interim, please monitor your athletes carefully for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 and remember to keep them home if they are having symptoms. Also, as a reminder, if your student has been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, they should be self-quarantining for 14 days per the Wabash (County) Health Department. It is also recommended that anyone who has been in contact be tested.”

The first Squire team to see inter-school competition is scheduled to be the girls golf team. While the Manchester athletic web site doesn’t have schedules for the 2020-21 school year posted, the girls golf squad played in the Huntington North Invitational last season, and that event is scheduled for Aug. 4 this season. Wawasee’s golf schedule shows a dual competition with Manchester on Aug. 10. Everything else traditionally starts the third week of August, with the first football game scheduled for Aug. 21 against visiting Three Rivers Conference foe North Miami, per JohnHarrell.net.

Editor’s Note: This is the second in a three-part series of stories from an interview with Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert.
