NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester University women's basketball team dropped a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game to visiting Rose-Hulman in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Wednesday night. The Fightin' Engineers topped the Spartans by a final tally of 66-57.

Manchester outscored the Fightin' Engineers 32-24 through the first two periods of play on Wednesday night. Freshman Hannah Lindsey  scored all 10 of her points in the first two quarters which helped the Spartans build their early lead. Lindsey added four rebounds and four steals on Wednesday.

Rose-Hulman's defense was difficult to overcome in the third and fourth quarters as the Spartans were limited to just 25 total points following the intermission. RHIT outscored Manchester 42-25 in the second half.

Manchester was held to 36 percent (22-61) shooting on the evening and was 7-25 (28 percent) from downtown. The Spartans also committed 19 turnovers.

Rose-Hulman shot 46.3 percent (25-54) for the game and held a narrow 39-34 advantage in rebounding.

Sophomore Macy Miller  led the Black & Gold with 15 points and five rebounds. Miranda Bieghler added 11 points and four boards off the bench.

Manchester fell to 8-10, 5-6 HCAC. The Spartans remain firmly in the hunt of an HCAC Tournament berth entering the final month of the season. Manchester will take on Hanover College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.

RHIT won consecutive games for the first time this season and improved to 4-14, 3-8 HCAC. The Fightin' Engineers will take on Mount St. Joseph at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.



Spartan Men Fall

TERRE HAUTE – The Manchester University men's basketball team fell in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on the road at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology by a final score of 77-61 on Wednesday January 29.

The Spartans were unable to recover from a slow start on Wednesday night. Host Rose-Hulman opened up a 15-5 advantage seven minutes into the game and never trailed on Wednesday.

Manchester got five straight points from CJ Hampton late in the opening period that drew the Spartans within a basket, 26-24. Despite trailing by double digits for most of the first half, the Spartans trailed by just seven, 31-24, at halftime.

Manchester remained within striking distance in the early stages of the second period. With 13 minutes remaining in the game, Rose-Hulman then utilized a 20-7 run that spanned eight minutes to put the game out of reach.

The Spartans were held to 33 percent (21-63) shooting on Wednesday. MU made 13 of its 35 3-point field goal attempts for a 37 percent clip.

Rose-Hulman shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the field and converted 18 of its 22 (81.8 percent) free throw attempts. The Fightin' Engineers also outrebounded Manchester 50-25.

The Spartans were led by CJ Hampton's 15 points and five rebounds. Jalen Owens, playing in his hometown, added 11 points and five assists.

Manchester fell to 6-12, 4-7 HCAC on the season. The Spartans will begin the month of February at home on Saturday afternoon when the Hanover College Panthers visit Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. Game time this weekend is slated for 3 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's contest.

The Fightin' Engineers have won back-to-back games and improved to 9-9, (6-5 HCAC). Rose will host Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.
