Whitko Comeback Bid Falls Short In Loss To ‘Busco

Whitko cut the lead to six in the third quarter thanks to performances from Brett Sickafoose and Drake Lewis; however, the Eagles managed to claw through the rough spell to win their sixth straight game.
“We haven’t been handling pressure very well,” said head coach Eli Henson. “We’ve just been a little careless with the ball lately, and that is something we have to fix. You’re not going to win any big games being careless with the ball, so if there’s one thing we have to improve it’s our toughness.
Sickafoose concluded the game with 26 points, while Lewis had 18. “It’s just outside of those two where we need to get more production,” said Henson.
After going ahead 10-0 to start the evening’s affair, the visitors never looked back. Junior Landen Jordan, leading the way with a handful of dunks and multiple alley-oop attempts, caused Whitko matchup problems all over the court.
“We were just going to pack it in, and pray they wouldn’t hit threes,” said Henson. “Then we knew once they shoot, we’d need to find a way to get a rebound. But I mean, there’s no way.”
Standing at 6-foot-8, Jordan finished the night with 21 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
“It’s going to be very difficult to battle with a kid like that,” continued Henson, “but at least we battled and played hard. We had some good energy, but that’s a tough one to win.”
The arena quieted to a hush in the second quarter when Clayton Ebbinghouse attempted a steal at the top of the arc, and his body flipped over in midair. The senior Wildcat laid motionless for a brief spell before sitting up and receiving applause from both the home and away crowds. Ebbinghouse did not re-enter the game, yet still ended the night with 12 points.
In the JV Contest, Whito defeated Churubusco 72-46. The Wildcats went into halftime up 30-6. Keith Miller, Brent Bowers, Aiden Hoffman, and David Ousley all had double digit point totals.
Whitko (8-12, 5-4 TRC) drop to 4-7 at home this season. They travel to Manchester on Tuesday night to face the Squires in a Three Rivers Conference season finale.
Sectional Draw - In Sunday’s IHSAA draw, Whitko drew No. 2 Fort Wayne Blackhawk (19-3) in the second game of the Class 2A Manchester sectional on March 4. On the other side of the bracket, the host Squires (9-11) will take on Fort Wayne Canterbury (10-11) in a second quarterfinal on Tuesday. Game times will be announced.
