Tigers Have No Answer For Carmel

Coach Doug Ogle, admittedly frustrated, said he didn’t have an answer for the way his Warsaw boys basketball team played Saturday night.

Likewise, on the court the Tigers didn’t have an answer for Class 4A defending state champion Carmel.

In Warsaw’s final home game of the season - with its four senior players and its senior cheerleaders honored between the JV and varsity contests - the Carmel Greyhounds scored the first seven points, led 31-7 at halftime and cruised to a 63-35 win.

Along the way, Carmel (14-7) made 8 of 13 three-point attempts and was 17 of 23 at free throw line, while shooting 56 percent from the field overall.

The Tigers, on the other hand, were 4 of 10 from the arc, 5 of 13 at the charity stripe, and made just 35 percent of their attempts from the field overall.

“Well, Carmel is really good, but I can’t explain how we’re playing right now,” said Ogle, whose team fell to 11-8 after losing for the seventh time in the last 10 games.

“It’s frustrating that I don’t have an answer. For us to play like we did in the first half, especially offensively, hurt us. We only turned the ball over four times in the first half, I think, but we didn’t shoot well. We said we had to be patient, we couldn’t take challenged shots … and in the first half we didn’t shoot well.

“I feel like we did better in the second half offensively, but in the first half we didn’t rebound, our defense wasn’t talking, our transition defense was not good because everybody went to rebound and we gave up a dunk, and then another time we didn’t matchup and gave up an three.

“It’s all of our faults … the players who played, myself … we’re not going to give up, but the first half was pretty discouraging. I don’t know why we played like that. I wish I did. The only thing I can say is Carmel is really good and we were not very good tonight.”

The Tigers were 3 of 18 from the field through the first two quarters, while Carmel made 12 of 17 shot attempts over the first 16 minutes en route to the 24-point lead at the break.

Carmel also outrebounded Warsaw 31-18, helping the Greyhounds to an 11-2 advantage in second-chance points.

Six-foot-6 junior guard Brian Waddell led Carmel with 13 points and six rebounds, while 6-9 sophomore center Charlie Williams added 13 points and four boards.

Senior Jackson Jannsen and junior Connor Gioia chipped in with 10 and nine points, respectively, in the 28-point win.

The Tigers, who scored 17 of their 35 points in the fourth quarter, got eight points from senior Keagan Larsh. Senior Blake Marsh and junior Brock Poe tallied six points each.

Carmel won the JV game 42-39.

Jaxson Gould led the JV Tigers with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
